'All Signs Point to Windows 7 in 2010'

Microsoft looks to learn from the successes and failures of Vista to deliver its strongest OS yet

Windows Vista was supposed to usher in a new era for Windows operating systems, employing a stylish aero graphical user interface and offering many improvements over its previous version.

However for all its hits, the OS has certainly had its misses.  Initial hardware support for the 64-bit home version was bad leading to multiple incompatibilities, while the more "user-safe" interface with its many prompts (which some don't realize can be disabled) left many annoyed.  Further, the multiple SKUs left many wondering what they were buying, though in Microsoft's defense, the software giant did document the differences between versions extensively online, and worked with retailers to provide this information.

...

Microsoft is pushing ahead strong on its plans to release its next generation operating system, Windows 7.  Whereas Vista took over 5 years to release -- XP released October '01, Vista's retail release was in January '07 -- Windows 7 will reach customers in a mere 3 years, according to Microsoft.  Leaks also reveal that the Redmond-based company sent a test version of Windows 7 known as Milestone 1 (M1) to select partners in January 2008.

In an email, a Microsoft spokesman, confirmed that 2010 was the correct Windows 7 date -- three years after the consumer Vista release.  He stated, "We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and development is scoped to three years from Windows Vista Consumer GA. The specific release date will be determined once the company meets its quality bar for release."

Microsoft may have already reached Milestone 2 (M2) in the development, which it had projected to reach in March/April, though the company refused to comment on the progress. [..]

They are likely going to end up supporting Windows XP until 2014 so I guess if people don't like the next version after Vista they can still wait. lol.

Oh good! I like that Microsoft has a stable OS.

The unfortunate part is that it's showing its age.

And it's difficult to work with.

Re: 'All Signs Point to Windows 7 in 2010'

Guess they're putting the pedal to the metal, all right.

MIAMI--Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates on Friday indicated that Windows 7, the next major version of Windows, could come within the next year, far ahead of the development schedule previously indicated by the software maker.

In response to a question about Windows Vista, Gates, speaking before the Inter-American Development Bank here, said: "Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version." Referring to Windows 7, the code name for the next full release of Windows client software, Gates said: "I'm super-enthused about what it will do in lots of ways."

...

Windows 7 and its intended feature list have been the topic of speculation since Microsoft discussed some details of the new software last summer.

At that time, Microsoft said little except that Windows 7 will ship in consumer and business versions, and in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The company also confirmed that it is considering a subscription model to complement Windows, but did not provide specifics or a time frame.

Less than 24 hours ago, a Microsoft representative told CNET News.com that the company expects to ship the successor to Vista roughly three years from Vista's January 2007 debut.

Gates: Windows 7 may come 'in the next year'

Windows 7 confirmed for 2010
Screenshots appear

By Nick Farrell: Monday, 26 May 2008, 1:01 PM

MICROSOFT has confirmed that Windows 7 will be with us "sometime in 2010" and appears to have released screenshots into the blogsphere.

A spokesvole said the release date of the successor to Windows Vista will ultimately be decided by, "meeting the quality bar". It is not the first time Microsoft has decided something in a good pub.

Client versions of Windows 7 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavours. A server version with the original title of Windows Server 7, is also being looked at.

The Vole is keeping deadly quiet about Windows 7 in case more punters decide that is probably worth waiting three years rather than buying the disappointing and lacklustre Vista. It also seems unlikely to want to promise the world and then have the embarrassment of having to pull all the functionality because it cannot get it to work.

However, screens of some of the early versions are starting to leak onto the Internet. They do not tell us much, other than it looks like Microsoft really has started to copy Apple's desktop. µ

Re: 'All Signs Point to Windows 7 in 2010'

2010... or sooner? 7 will be an iteration of Vista & Server '08, and MS is pushing now for driver writing to start early (i.e. on time).

Last week, after months of tight-lipped silence, Microsoft debuted Windows 7 to the press in a keynote at the Californian D6 conference.  The new operating system was clearly explained not to be a new architecture from Windows Vista, but rather an iterative improvement on Windows Server 2008 and Vista code.

...

As Microsoft's top leaders, Chairman and founder Bill Gates and Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, have publicly committed to moving the release date up from 2010 to 2009, Microsoft has begun an early drive to urge hardware manufacturers to begin developing their drivers and testing them on upcoming beta versions of the OS.

By testing the beta versions of the OS, Microsoft hopes to avoid one of the major problems that plagued Windows Vista's early days, particularly those of the 64-bit version -- driver incompatibility.  Microsoft is adopting a carrot and stick approach for driver testing.  Hardware manufacturers who fail to heed Microsoft's bidding won't qualify for Microsoft's Windows Logo certified compatibility program for Windows 7 or Vista.  In a bulletin (PDF) Microsoft states, "Beginning with the first beta of Windows 7 all Windows Vista submissions must include a complete CPK with tests logs from Windows 7."

When Microsoft mentions CPK, they are talking about the electronics testing process.

My bold. http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=11954

Does this mean it will spam itself? I find updates from MS to be often and large. I hate doing the updates, because they seem to execute only a part of them and require me to update again and again.

Don't quite know how to respond here...

Does what mean it will 'spam itself?'

I find updates from MS to be often and large. I hate doing the updates, because they seem to execute only a part of them and require me to update again and again.

That's not been my experience. Aside from the occasional urgent security patch, most updates occur first Tuesday of the month, and almost all take on the first try.

Then perhaps I'm being overly harsh. Could be the overhead I'm working through. This laptop isn't my property, and it has coporate installed scripts on it for "security" and to make the IT department happy.
