Mini update?

So with my tax rebate checks I would like to buy a Mac Mini but when is apple going to update them?

Re: Mini update?

Whenever they darn well feel like it.

The big updates tend to be either in July at the expo, or just before the back-to-school rush, or the holiday rush, or... well...

Basically, just buy what you want and don't feel remorse. You could spend your entire life second-guessing while you wait for the "next big upgrade."

Re: Mini update?

The mini will never have a goodish video card in it anyway. That's why I didn't get one.

Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

Re: Mini update?

The MacRumors Buyer's Guide suggests that now is BAD time to buy a Mac mini because an update is likely soon.

Re: Mini update?

It all depends on what you want to do with it.  I am quite happy with the performance of my intel mini with 2gb.  It performs quite well for my needs.  I do video editing with iMovie, and songwriting/recording with garageband.  I can record 20 tracks of audio before it starts to stress.  I haven't pushed it to its limits yet either.

I know those are not the pro applications - but again, to each their own I say!

Re: Mini update?

What the Mini needs...

- Upgradeable RAM.
- Graphics card on par with the iMac.
- Solid State option.

Then the Mini would kick arse!

It has that. You obviously mean another word or are missing the words more and/or easily.

- Graphics card on par with the iMac.

Or at least the damn MacBook

- Solid State option.

It has some but unfortunately they're all third party and overly expensive.

Re: Mini update?

- Read my response
- Know what you are talking about

The RAM is user upgradable (with some undue difficulty) to 3 GB. If they switched to the the GMA X3100 they could bump that up to 4 GB (like everything but the Mac Pro & Xserve) as well as providing for better graphics, and faster Wifi and it wouldn't take a complete redesign.

As far as solid state options, that will be a while before it a s first party standrd option but it will eventually happen even on apple's lowest end systems.

Re: Mini update?

An X3100 graphics update would be enough to push me over the edge. Though the wife may have other thoughts.

Re: Mini update?

Ok, user serviceable RAM.

SSD is a good idea to add as an option. Im sure there's a multitude of uses for minis that are SS. The X3100 graphics would be a start, but it still should have a decent graphics option.

Re: Mini update?

Well, it is but it isn't. Officially it isn't user serviceable. Unofficially it is possible for a user to upgrade the RAM on the Mini without breaking something and thus voiding the warranty. It's just incredibly difficult to do so.

It is difficult, but if I can do it, most of us on these forums should be able to.

It's also possible to replace the HD in a iMac or MacBook Pro. hmm

Either way, the Mini needs a rethink at Apple's end. It's a good machine, it's just it could be a better machine!
