THANK YOU for "Hardcore How-Tos"
We don't usually post but we just had to stop by and THANK YOU for the 'Hardcore How-Tos' article in the April '08 issue. This is the best meat and potatoes article that we have ever seen in the magazine, and we'll now reconsider not renewing (yes that was a compliment)
Once again, thanks for the great article, I've told several friends about it and they plan to buy a copy now too

Yes, and I think it took some backbone to actually post it. Not your typical Mac magazine article that's for sure. This is information that a person can actually use. When I first saw it advertised on the cover I thought to myself that it was some kind of a joke. I said to myself "OK Self, when I turn to the page that is supposed to show me how to 'make copies of a DVD' it will probably just say to use a photocopying machine"

Re: THANK YOU for "Hardcore How-Tos"
I liked the DVD stuff, but the music stuff was a waste. Just burn a CD and reimport the songs. Why do all the work in the article? I would've like to see how to capture an audio/video stream, like the new Hulu service. or how 'bout a way to make ourTunes work with iTunes 7? Don't get me wrong, I liked the article overall.

I believe that effects the fidelity...

I can't hear the difference between a DRM'd 128k itunes song and that same song burned to CD and ripped back to my Mac. Perhaps I've been to one too many Flogging Molly shows to be be able to hear the difference.

Probably.
It does effect the fidelity, but it would take a relatively sensitive ear to notice for most pop music. Classical or Jazz (and even some classic rock, Beatles, Elvis, etc.) is "delicate" enough and has a wide enough dynamic range that you'd notice further degradation vis a vis an already not-too-awesome AAC.

Most likely, but part also depends on if you are male or female, and also your age.

A very small part. Other factors are far more important.

Re: THANK YOU for "Hardcore How-Tos"
Yup. Age and testosterone mainly play a part in one's ability to hear very high frequencies; not many men my age can hear a pure sine wave @20kHz... but decades of critical listening help offset the influences of being raised on highly compressed sound from TVs, radios and the like, and regarding sound like that as 'normal,' real, and accurate, to the point where live, unamplified instruments sound unnatural.
Not to mention the outright hearing loss referenced above.

Re: THANK YOU for "Hardcore How-Tos"
It goes far beyond testosterone. Men and women's ears process auditory signals differently. The inner hair cells convert the vibrations to neural cells and send them to the brain. Men decode with the left side of the brain, while women use both sides. Mens hearing is more linear, while womens focus on the midrange.
