Beatles (finally) coming to iTunes?

http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-988953 … g=nefd.top

I don't understand. Why is Apple paying $400-$600 million? For what? Just for the right to put the Beatles on iTunes? Do they not pay the Beatles the $0.70 or whatever they pay per song?

Does anyone know?

Michael Jackson needs the money to build a home for wayward kids in Dubai.

The Beatles (through Apple Records) still owns the rights to the Beatles recordings. What Jackson owns is the Lennon-McCartney song catalog which is why you now can see various commercials using Beatles' tunes as their songs (but not the actual Beatles recordings). This is not to say that the Beatles might not have sold out their music by now, but as long as the catalog was still owned by EMI Records the Beatles were at least allowed a courtesy say-so on commercials sales and they had refused--with very rare exceptions--up until the catalog sale to Jackson.

He doesn't have any control over the Beatles' recordings although he will get some money should any deal be made. This would be for performance royalties which--in turn, depending the contract that the Beatles had/have--he may have pay to some royalties to the authors of the music and lyrics (which would be mostly to Lennon and McCartney). This is why Jackson and company would be "informed" but not much else.

Um... who cares?

Beatles on your iPod... Buy - Rip - iPod

I don't understand why it is such a big deal bringing the Beatles catalog to iTunes!

All tracks DRM free... that's a news story not a 50 year old band making their records available for an aging demographic.

Yeah, the Beatles was just some run-of-the-mill cover group.

Yeah... my bird can sing, too.

Perhaps Jackson will relocate to Dubai if he can't make the payments on Neverland. Fewer paparazzi and perhaps even enough plastic surgeons to keep his nose attached. No aging demographics, either! :shakefist:

It's a big deal because it'll make Apple a lot of money. You can bet that as soon as an iTunes/Beatles deal is available, that quarter's fiscal results will be huge. And it's not just pure Beatles sales alone. Apple's hoping that the Beatles will bring in new customers. That's the big deal.

Personally, I don't care. I have the CDs. But you can't look at it the way you did, as an ageist. You have to look at it it terms of revenue, and that "aging demographic" that buys Beatles music is one that has a lot of money to spend on media that to them, has historical value.

And I have the LPs also, some of them imports.

Whatever Apple Legal maintains, many of us would put good money on the notion that Apple Computer was named after Apple Records.

'Nirvana Computer' just doesn't sound the same... nor Parliament Comp, Earth, Wind and Compies, or JobsWozComp.

Name me something as good.

Re: Beatles (finally) coming to iTunes?

I thought I heard McCartney's divorce gets finalized in the next week or so, and as soon as that's wrapped up, all the remasters will be released. They're all mastered and ready to go, but they want to ensure Paul's ex doesn't run away with the loot.
