Folding on Intel Macs

Thread updated:  April 21, 2009

Intel Mac users: Get the SMP installer.   The faster your Mac, the faster a protein gets done.

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download

Mac OS X 10.4+ Intel/PPC
Universal Installer
(SMP on Intel only)

For new members and most of the team: Do not use the "console only" version.

Only a couple people on the team use the "console only" version.   They know who they are. brow

Current version is 6.24.1.

Here is the "official" install guide from Stanford Folding Group.  http://folding.stanford.edu/English/MacSMPGuide   (Most of us only need the top half of that page.) (It's out of date because of the  version # and the icon has changed from green to red-yellow-blue-pink.)

You're downloading a "zip" file which is pretty quick.  Double-click on the zip file, which then unzips the file.  An orange "installer package" now appears.   Run that to install.   Moving down, we then activate Folding.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs

1. After installing Folding , you need to go to System Preferences.

2. Enter team number "18" and your Folding name.

No spaces in the folding name plz.  Probably no "@" symbol either.

EDIT coming soon for the 2nd image, but don't worry about it.

3. YOU HAVE TO ENABLE FOLDING in SYSTEM PREFERENCESClick the auto-start and enter your password. Otherwise, nothing has been started.

http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/2253/folding2lb1.png

After you have enabled the auto-start, the button will change to "Disable."  (a bit confusing I know.)  That is it.   You're fully enabled.  Ignore the passkey space.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs

Awesome, I just started folding. It looks like it is working. Is there anyway to see your stats/team stats?

Edit: P.S. my username is Macmenace and I think I'm on team 18.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs

Proteins for this version take between 15 to 30 hours to complete, generally speaking, on the modern Macs.

Its okay to put the Mac to sleep or shutdown.   Folding will continue automatically upon start up.

Some posts were split off.   I like to prune the threads about installers so that people don't get confused.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs

For team members doing an update:  http://folding.stanford.edu/English/MacSMPInstall

Before you install Folding@home:
If you are running a Folding@home client already, stop it, you will continue where you left off.

If you are using a script or software to auto-start a Folding@home client you MUST disable/stop it before installation.

Make sure you are logged in as the user you want to run Folding@home as.

After installation, you must open your System Preferences, and set the Folding@home preferences and start the client running.

OR if you wish to use the console client, just run (or set your scripts to run):

/Applications/Folding@home.app/fah6 -smp    You may also want the "-local" flag.

.....

The 6.02 and 6.20 Release versions have no expiration date.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs

To completely uninstall  http://folding.stanford.edu/English/MacSMPInstall

To completely uninstall, you want to delete these 4 things...

/Applications/Folding@home.app/
/Library/LaunchDaemons/Folding@home.plist
/Library/PreferencePanes/Folding@home.prefPane/
~/Library/Folding@home/

All are easy to get to with Finder. Removing the last one has the expected permanent loss of config and WU's.

the first post was also updated today

Re: Folding on Intel Macs

I followed the directions, and used the links, on this page, but I'm not sure it's working right.  After setting up the System Preferences for Folding@home, the last line under the Preferences tab says "Folding@home running (auto-start)".

How do I know that it's running?   There's no F@h icon on my dock, and it's not listed in the Force Quit list of currently running applications.

And then, if I click on the F@h Application icon, I get a message that says "You can't open the application "Folding@home" because it is not supported on this architecture."  I've got a new Mac Pro, 2.66 Quad-Core Intel Xeon, ready and willing!

Please help! Thanks!

Re: Folding on Intel Macs

Welcome Kara

In the Folding section of System Preferences, click the auto-start and enter your admin password.   In a  few minutes, not only will you see "fah6" in Activity Monitor, but also the 4 copies of "fah_core".  Also, a whole bunch of files will appear in the folder  Home / Library / Folding@Home.

Don't worry about the Folding in the Applications folder.   The fah6 has its home inside of there.

A Mac Pro !   very nice..   we should see your Mac Pro on the charts in 48 hours.

Re: Folding on Intel Macs

I use a program called Increase to view my FAH stats, it does a real good job of viewing whether the job is running, how many points the work unit is worth, and also estimated time to completion. itʻs been a long time since I installed it, but I think you add the group where  your client.cfg file is and it gets itʻs stats from there.  the client.cfg file is located in the folding@home folder in the library folder in you user home folder. anyway, glad to have you aboard, this is a great way to make an idle computer do something useful. smile

Congratulations, Kara.   You're on the board with 2 new proteins of 1920 points each = 3840 points today.  Here are your statistics.
