Issues connecting HP to Airport Express
Hey all,
I'm running MBP 2.16 w/ 10.4.11, using an airport express. My new room mate has an HP DV 6000 running Vista. She is having issues connecting via the Express. I have tried reseting the express, and changing the security settings on the express. She can some times connect with limited success, ie. she can connect to the express, but is unable to connect to the internet. I have tried everything I can think of, but have no knowledge of vista, and am sure that there is something I'm over looking. She gets a message saying "The saved settings on this computer do not match the requirements for the network". There is another unsecured network within range that we can both connect to with no problems. Any ideas??

Re: Issues connecting HP to Airport Express
Do you have a new AirPort Express, one that supports 802.11n WiFi? And did you set it up to work only with 11n devices? It may be that your roommate's DV6000 only has an 11b/g card and cannot work with 11n networks.
If you are using WPA2/WPA to secure your WiFi, for a mixed Mac & Windows environment you should limit your WiFi names and passwords to just basic letters and numbers because Macs and Windows machines handle some characters (like accented letters) differently. While this does make it easier to crack into WPA WiFi, you may not have much of a choice about this. You can compensate by using a longer password--for this you can go to GRC's Perfect Password Page where passwords in several forms are generated each time you load the page.
If neither of the above helps, then perhaps you can supply us with some more details on how you have your AirPort Express set up.

I don't have the new express, I have the one that supports b/g. with the default firm ware. I believe the problem comes into play with the encryption/security settings. What settings should I use for compatibility??

WPA2 is preferred although WPA is likely enough for encrypting wireless traffic. WEP is hopelessly breakable--a current computer with the right software can crack WEP in less than a minute--and should not be used on any WiFi network where security is any concern. For the name of your network and its passwords, please read the second paragraph of my previous post.
I did a Google search using "airport The saved settings on this computer do not match the requirements for the network" as the search terms and eventually found these two pages (one and two) which may explain how to connect your roommate's Vista machine to your secured WiFi network. The problem seems more due to Vista's less-than-obvious way of making a secured connection as opposed to the AirPort being the problem.
