Time Capsule: worth it, or lame?
I have a time capsule on backorder with macmall, and now that it's been almost 3 weeks and it still hasn't shipped, and now the shipping from the Apple Store is 1-3 business days, I am thinking I'll either cancel with macmall and order from Apple, or just forget this whole thing and just get an APE and an external drive, foregoing the whole wireless backup idea. From what I've read it takes forever to back your stuff up, your Wi-fi gets bogged down during his process, and the last thing I need is for a restore to take another super long drawn out forever and a day time period. Opinions? Experiences?

I don't have one so can't speak to any experiences with it, but I have a MBP and use Time Machine to back up and it would be really nice if I didn't have to be constantly plugging and unplugging my Time Machine drive.

Re: Time Capsule: worth it, or lame?
Got mine set up yesterday. It cloned my Airport Extreme fine, although I wish I'd simply first applied the firmware update before proceeding any further with setup. Setup went south until this was done. I did have to reconfig my Airport Express, which I use as a signal extender, which took a minute total.
I'm taking MacWorld's advice and doing my first backup via Ethernet, since I don't have a 802.11n card in my desktop (which has the lion's share of files).

Worth it in the sense that a backup is always worth it.
Lame in the sense that first version Apple products usually skimp a little on features and make up for it in ease-of-use.
I would get one, but I back up other ways already.

Re: Time Capsule: worth it, or lame?
I don't have Time Capsule but I still back-up over with Time Machine over AirDisks (new firmware update). It was a pain to configure and the initial back-up tool over 9 hours for 60 GBs of data from my MBP. However, now that the initial back-up is done, and if the external disk is mounted, back-ups happen automatically as they should, are quick (only data that has changed is backed-up) and it happens flawlessly. You do need a fast internet connection (I have FiOS), but if you do you will not notice any slow down what so ever - I don't notice anything as far as slowdowns when online.
It is recommended that if you are backing up large files such as when using Final Cut, for example, that you uncheck this option to back up as it will take forever. You can do so under prefs in Time Machine.
After the new firmware everything seems as it should hsve been all along.

Re: Time Capsule: worth it, or lame?
I bought a Time Capsule about a month ago from Apple's online store and I love it and recommend it highly.
All of our computers are running Tiger or earlier, so we don't have Time Machine for back ups. I have read, as you have, that complete back ups take a loooooooong time the first time. I just back up selected files manually, just those that are critical for me, and that takes no time at all, although storing TV shows I had bought from iTunes took a while as they are large files.
Note to those who, like me, experienced problems getting older computers to connect to Time Capsule's WiFi signal: Do the firmware update that was just released. I did and the problem connecting my old Powerbook Pismo instantly went away.

Re: Time Capsule: worth it, or lame?
I got the Time Capsule. It worked flawlessly as a router between an iMac G5 and a MacBook. The iMac doesn't have leopard on it yet so I did not do a Time Machine Backup, and that's the machine I want to back up to free the internal hard drive from its backup partition. I did not update the firmware, unless Airport Utility did that in the background, but that's the next thing to check before I do any Time Machining.

I don't have a Time Capsule, but the cooling (or lack thereof ) of the HD worries me a little, so I'd personally have gone with Airport Extreme - AirDisk - External HD.
