close my macbook and not sleep??
Is there a way for me to close my macbook and have it not fall asleep. so that i can carry it and not sign off ichat or stop my downloads etc. Thanks

where would you be carrying your laptop to? once you are out of range of your wifi signal your downloads would stop anyway.

The toilet, the back yard, the garage, the kitchen, the living room, the den, the rec. room. 
I have carried my laptop to all of those locations

yes but you don't need to close your laptop to carry it around the house.
it sounded to me like R1 wanted to get on the bus and go cross town.

I really don't see how taking a laptop to the (i assume you are referring to) toilet is any worse than what most males do in front of their computer and DON'T wash their hands before using the mouse again.
