Just ordered a new Touch with the new software
Am I gonna like it? I bought it mostly for the web browsing through the wifi. I'm thinking of email and maps there. I can also use a new PDA. I'll play my music through my nano which is way better for me.
Part of me is thinking I overbought for what I am going to use it for.

Re: Just ordered a new Touch with the new software
You're gonna totally love it. The dedicated Mail app works so much better than trying to stick with webmail via Safari.
I took the office Touch with me on a recent weekend jaunt to England (didn't want to have the iPhone and worry about keeping it in Airplane mode to avoid crazy roaming charges), and the maps, Web surfing, and email were all lifesavers. Didn't even bother bringing my Mac. Watched a rented movie on the flight, too. The screen is soooo nice.
You might come around on the music as well. I mean, it's not like carrying a nano too would add much weight to your pockets, but the iPod functions on the touch are very pleasant to use.
I bet you'll really dig it. Especially when the Apps Store comes along and you can get games and stuff for it as well. Although that's not out until June and you'll have to pay "a nominal fee" (they wouldn't say how much, still TBD) to upgrade the software to get the Apps Store.

Suz, I thought you didn't get an iPhone.
Or did you just decide to wait?
Thanks for clicking.

Can the touch (iPod/iPhone) be used as a PDA the same way a Palm is? If so, I'll get one eventually.

Re: Just ordered a new Touch with the new software
Okay, I have had it for about two weeks. Yes, it works fine as a PDA.
I have had some problems with the Mail program. In fact, it doesn't seem to be working at all right now. I have also had some problems connecting to wifi networks.
Overall, I'm okay with it but it wasn't quite the boon I thought it would be.

not really sure what you mean by this ... but maybe if you listed things you do with your palm ... we could tell you if the touch can do it.

Well, I have a Palm Zire and the Touch does everything it does as far as I can tell. Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Clock. It doesn't do it the same way.....I think it's better.
Of course the Touch doesn't have all the third party programs that the Palm has but I guess those are on the way.

Cool, that's just what I wanted to here!
I just asked my wife if she wanted my Tungsten/E2 so I could get a Touch. She said wait until your birthday which is the end of August. The good thing about waiting is all those 3rd party apps will be out and maybe even an update for the Touch will be coming around that time (I will be getting the low end model since I already have a 4th gen iPod for all my music and will be using the touch primary as my PDA, some e-mail and occasional web surfing)

Re: Just ordered a new Touch with the new software
I just got the 8GB and it seems REALLY awesome. As a PDA, for which it will be primarily used for, it lacks many features such as Copy/Paste, real repeating events that can be repeated on a specific day, say every 1st and 2nd Monday of every month, for example, and alerts that actually work (you know, alert you with some sort of tone which they do not). But hey, all that is needed are a few hundred software releases that will surely address all of these issues. The are unlimited amounts of possibilities out there.
Surfing the net is a little slow but doable if you need to. I can't get Mail to work. According to the Apple Store genius, this is an issue with my carrier, Verizon. *wonders how many months/years it will take them to fix*. Apparently Verizon sees security holes in this method of retrieving e-mail and is trying to plug them? Maps seems cool as is the weather widget.
Oh, and the keyboard is neat and works well, but I'm finding it difficult to master with my fat fingers!
To be honest, I was about a second away from getting a Palm Smart Phone - I had the credit card out and everything but when the sales person said she needed to do something quickly for someone else (and having an overly tired 3 1/2 year old with me getting nutty) I left [Apple Store was in the same mall] rationalizing to myself that the Palm Phone/PDA was too bulky and my cell phone was always left in my car and hardly ever used. It was a close one though, but I feel I made the right decision. The Touch is packed with cool features I will use and there will be tons more come June.

I'm glad that you like it. I didn't mean to mislead you when I said I though it worked well as a PDA. I don't use copy/paste much or repeating events so those functions didn't enter my mind when making the recommendation.
As you say, come June there will be plenty of little apps for the Touch which will likely solve all the little glitches.
I'm pretty satisfied with mine. I'll take it on a trip this weekend and I suspect the Maps and Safari will come in handy to find my away around and to find my way to local restaurants.

The feel of the Touch, just like all iPods, is rugged/solid in the hand. Before buying I spoke extensively to an Apple sales agent and one of the questions I brought up was the glass looking screen and if it would "get all scratched up easily?" The sales agent then picked up one of the demos, took out his car key, and began to "attempt" to scratch the screen but obviously was unable to do so. Pretty impressive, my smurfy Razor was scratched all over in a matter of hour of being in my coat pocket with my car keys! The only area he said to worry about scratching, which is also typical with all the iPods, is the shiny back. He recommended getting a case regardless and recommended the Contour Showcase. It's a little of the pricier ones ($34.95) but is totally worth it.
I can say the Apple rep really knew his stuff. Although I did say to a random rep that I needed to speak to someone who was very familiar with the PDA functions, etc., of the Touch, and he went and got that person.

I've got a case too. A DLO hip something or other. Works well. Using the Touch now in the hotel lobby.
