Copy segments of studio movies
Hi there relatively new user to mac (love it). I'm a teacher and was wondering if there is software for the mac that will let me select segments from a movie (studio movie) into one continuous stream.
Example the movie 300 is rated R, but there are several 1-3 min segments I would love to show the class. I could put the disk in a dvd player and fast forward to the point I want but there are 2 issues with that 1) it is clunky and not super efficient and 2) the possibility of inadvertently showing something inappropriate.
Would there be issues with copyright if I'm only taking a few minutes from the film, showing it in an education, and not distributing it for profit.
Hopefully I posted this in the question in the right place (my first post).
Thanks!

You are in the right place however ... there are copyright issues ... which is why we can't talk about it around here ...

There shouldn't be copyright issues, considering the poster is a teacher. I'd expect most educational establishments to have licenses for showings, full or partial. This sounds like fair-use. (I guess the fear might be DMCA-related.)
I believe that DVD Player's video clip functionality might provide an utterly unobjectionable way to do this. More information.

Coming from the edu world. I can state that you should assume the opposite. I my experience k-12 institution tend to be the biggest copyright breakers. When you are talking about hollywood ... fair use does not apply to any public performance

Using short excerpts in an educational setting, is fair use. Hollywood can jump high or low, they don't get to decide what is or isn't fair use. There are no copyrights issues with this situation, most likely.
However, in your land of the free, it is illegal to break the copy protection of a DVD, and therefore the copyright issue is moot.
