Boot Camp or Parallels?
I'd like to run some PC game software on my iMac (one of the newer models, 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo 2, 4 GB of memory, running Leopard). I have a PC I run these games on currently, but I'd like to sell it and use the iMac exclusively. I could use Boot Camp and install Windows, but one of my friends uses Parallels and told me about it. I like the idea of being able to use Windows without the need to reboot, but he says Boot Camp might be better for running games.
So, just in case any of you are using Parallels with PC games out there, how well does it work? Would I be better off using Boot Camp instead?

Boot Camp is better for games.

Re: Boot Camp or Parallels?
Install in Boot Camp. Then use VMWare instead of Parallels.
That will let you boot natively into Windows to run games and use VMWare to run Windows while booted into OS X.

Re: Boot Camp or Parallels?
This is interesting. I too was planning to replace my PC to Imac 20", 4g memory and 500gb HD. Run Parallel to boot both XP Pro and Leopard.
Guess I have to re-think this Bootcamp or Paralle??

Re: Boot Camp or Parallels?
I keep wondering which to use as well. Though VMware seems better...
I don't know. It's not like either one would bankrupt me. I just don't mind restarting and using bootcamp. Though it would be very useful for my wife to have it. We are thinking of getting her an Air Mac and imaging her work laptop on it.

Boot Camp or Parallels?
Both: Boot Camp for gaming, Parallels for work. A good combo...
Note that parallels are having some discounts now (they call it Spring Offer). This may be useful if you are willing to buy Paralllels in March.

I prefer to use combination of Parallels Desktop + BootCamp as 33specter does.
No doubts, BootCamp is the best app for gaming! (objectively)
Parallels Desktop is the best app for working in Windows apps! (for me)
So if we use them in combo we get all the best!
I run some games thru Parallels Desktop. But these are the games with pretty low system requirements. Check the list of the games on Parallels official web-site: http://www.parallels.com/en/products/de … atures/3d/.
Yes, if you decide to get Parallels Desktop follow 33specter's advice to get the opportunity of their new "Break into spring" offer!
Good luck!

Re: Boot Camp or Parallels?
On the question of Parallels vs. VM Fusion, a Apple Store clerk told me that Parallels seems to be more problematic and that her store has gotten more returns of Parallels and almost none of VM Fusion.

Re: Boot Camp or Parallels?
I like the look of Parallels, so I've been trying it and I'll keep using it if I don't have any trouble. I've tried playing games in it and the game usually refuses to run. I was able to get Unreal: Nai Pali to run in a window inside Parallels, but that's a pretty old game.
Yeah, plan on rebooting for games and just use the VM for applications that don't have to take over the whole machine to run.

I bought VMWare myself. Boot Camp for games though, I just use VMWare to run Vista.

I use parallels and I like it. As I play a bit I use Bootcamp very rarely. Parallels is enough for me.

That's natural. Some games just won't work with 3d support that virtualization currently provides. I hope this will be improved somewhere in Parallels 4.X

Re: Boot Camp or Parallels?
I think that VM ware is the way to go if you can't afford to re-boot. If you are going to use windows for gaming only, then just go with Boot-Camp. I think it's important to have both though, and VM ware will allow you to use your boot camp partition.

As well as Parallels Desktop will...
About these 2 apps (Fusion and Parallels Desktop) I can say just that everything is individual and depends on personal attitude..
However, I have very positive experience running Parallels Desktop and glad to share with it to those who are choosing Virtual Machine's soft for gaming or whatever..

Well, Boot Camp is more simplistic and provides less flexibility. Optional for games and provides good speed.
Parallels is at least as good as VM Ware, if not better. I consider Parallels to be more consumer-oriented

Yep, agree about Parallels' consumer-orientation.. It especially concerns different marketing actions and support service..
Just a few days ago I've solved an issue about Windows Internet connection thru Parallels using Knowledge Base on their official web-site.. They gave me step-by-step guide that simply solved my problem.

Re: Boot Camp or Parallels?
Knowledge base is nice. I used it to find a solution how to make my Firewire HDD work. Parallels doesn't support Firewire but it's possible to make a shared folder on removable Firewire HDD.
Here it is http://www.parallels.com/en/kb/

Oh, great 33specter, thanks for this info about Firewire! Parallels doesn't support it, but there is a solution to run it. Perfect!

You are welcome. Feel free to ask any questions related to Parallels. But I'd advice you to stick to Parallels support forum in search for answers

Re: Boot Camp or Parallels?
Interestingly enough you can't launch windows off a USB drive..... nor will VMware so I'm stuck with Parallels. However since I use it strictly for work to keep compatibility and develop Director stuff and test on the PC side, its more than enough.
If gaming isn't a concern, I recommend either solution although VMware makes better use of multicore.

What do you mean by this? VMWare works better with Core 2 Duo processors? How doest this particularly shows up? What about Parallels then?
