++, especially if you're talking about BestBuy. I never walk into a Big Box store expecting sparkling wit. Actually, I don't expect to go anywhere and find that.

I think he meant fakery, not extortion.  Like the Authorized Apple Resellers we have here in Melbourne in lieu of a genuine Apple Store.

Re: So my local Best Buy has an Apple section now...

There's nothing wrong with brick and mortars, but I would hardly call Best Buy a brick and mortar.  Brick and mortar always implies a locally owned store to me.  Maybe this isn't so to everyone, but I absolutely differentiate a locally owned, well run store from a national chain store that has little to no control over store policies on a local basis.  The difference is often staggering in employee knowledge and customer service.

BB isn't really brick & mortar for a far different reason. It's more of a brick & click.

There are independent locally-owned stores?

Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

Re: So my local Best Buy has an Apple section now...

Both of the Best Buys here have nicely-sized Mac sections, and one also has an Apple Solutions Consultant on-site on certain days. I've only been to one of them since the Apple sections were installed, and they seem to actually like selling the Macs.

I took one of my friends who needed a computer over to one of the local Best Buy stores to look at computers, and the general salesguy was actually pretty unbiased... in addition to the typical Gateway Vista-based cowbox, he showed her an iMac and all the fun features such as iLife. She came away more impressed by the iMac than by the Gateway.

Since there's no genuine Apple Store here yet (but there's rumors that there might be one in the near future), Best Buy has to do a good job representing the Mac. Oh, and there's also a good local Apple Specialist, too (Signature Mac, which provides Mac repair services to many a place here).

Re: So my local Best Buy has an Apple section now...

I have seen Apple sections in both the CompUSA by us (now closed) and now the BB store.  My general observation is that the Apple reps in these sections are usually helpful, and the store employees not so much.  There are exceptions to this (usually a rare, knowledgeable store employee), but this seems to be the general trend.

This brings back memories of David Pogue's column in Macworld a long time ago about his playing dumb for a day to see what the CompUSA employees were like when it came to Macs... despicable in most cases.

Re: So my local Best Buy has an Apple section now...

Today's Best Buy experience:
I was wondering around best buy and notice a set of harman kardon sound sticks (II I believe) Having a set of Apple Pro Speakers, I start playing with them. The typical BB idiot walks up ... You should look at these klipche (SP?) speaks they sound just as good and they are like half the price... I said no thank you... He said " Have you listen to these".. I said no... I am not really in the market for speakers right now... So I walk down the isle to the keyboard section ... and start typing on one of those new apple key boards... He walks over and was like "Those don't work on PC's they are just for Mac ... I said OK He then said they won't work on PCs ... At this point I just rolled my eyes and he walked away ... WTF Apple keyboards work just fine on any pc that can use a USB keyboard. Thats not getting into the fact that I have 9+ macs in my house.

Ugg

I bought the keyboard despite the recommendation ... + I have a 25$ gift card.

Why didn't you tell him outright he's a clueless moron? I would have. Hell, I think I'll go trolling at BB this weekend for that purpose alone!
