low cost Apple laptops?

I was reading an article on the Asus Eee PC.  I guess it is quite successful.  The article came around to mentioning potential competitors and this was a quote:

"But rivals will soon start moving onto Asus' turf, says tech analyst Martin Reynolds at researcher Gartner. One potentially huge threat: Apple. The company behind the iPod "has been looking really hard at the future," Reynolds says. "You could see Apple notebooks getting really low in price."

I wonder if this guy knows what he is talking about.  Apple likes their huge profit margins.  I can definitely see a small laptop from Apple though.

Re: low cost Apple laptops?

In theory, Apple could definitely enter the sub-$600 market.  However, I believe that there are a couple of key areas that would need to be addressed before that becomes a serious possibilty.  The one that comes to mind immediately is Leopard.

It's beautiful, and that can be a problem.  I personally think that it runs like crap on machines that don't have dedicated GPUs.  Basic stuff, such as magnifying the dock gets choppy.  I would think that Steve Jobs probably shares that opinion.

Being a fellow perfectionist bastard, I might think that a better option for a UMLCPC might be a scaled implementation of OS X (a-la iPhone).  Although, now we get into other problems (will it run iWork, etc)...  this is also not accounting for any kind of brilliant chip mfg by Intel that might make OpenGL fx run better on small chips...

(sigh) Apple could do it if they want to, and they could dominate it if they wanted to... nuff said.

Not gonna happen.

These cheap laptops are meant for web and email and not much more. Apple's got the iPod Touch to compete there. wink

Hell, I'd be happy with a $600 MacBook. I was looking at a $599 Vaio at BeastBuy just yesterday and came real damn close to pulling out my wallet.

Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

Unless you become as little children, there's no way you will believe this crap.
