HTML 5, IMVHO, is a fat joke that was written by corporate interests with profit in mind. The W3 allowed it, and have greatly injured their reputation.
I suppose they feel that accesskeys are behavior (they are) and don't belong in the content layer.
But whatever. The spec isn't final, and I'll probably migrate towards XML anyway.

At the time I posted this topic, I was unaware that there was a way to set access keys with javascript. I don't really care anymore.
