I would guess the photoshopped "feel" is just some filters and adjustments that make it so crisp and unnaturally sharp for what you're used to seeing.
Do your part to combat global warming.

Keep in mind this is a compressed, online version. I originally saw the photo in the NYT's print edition, and it took up half a page. As in everything above the fold. It was huge. And it made it to publication in the paper, and in a book, hasn't been attacked in the rightwing blogosphere (that I know of), but hey ... a couple of guys here in MiniThink know what's what!
