hd 3cccd camcorders

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I am in a dither, trying to find a new camcorder that I can use on my imac. I am using Tiger OSX. My son bought me new software named Final Cut Express.

My husband said to by an High Def 3 CCCD camcorder. I have read review after review and am so confused. He keeps pointing me towards the Panasonic HDC-HS9, but it does not have the features that I want. I want the hard drive but with a view finder and want to be able to use a wireless mic. I keep leaning toward the Sony HDR-SR12 but it is not the 3 CCCD. Can anyone give me some tips?

I do movies for my church, and also our high school to use as fund raisers and I would like a "consumer semi professional" camera.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have studied reviews for hours and hours.

Thanks,
Jo

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

My recommendation is a HDV camera. Something along the lines of the HVR-A1P. This is the bottom end of a "consumer semi professional" camera.

Having the camera is only part of the deal. You'll need all the gear that comes with it. A Manfrotto tripod will set you back about $400US, for your basic bottom of the line fluid video head.

...Not to mention spare batteries and a decent case. Wireless mics don't generally come with the camera, you have to buy those separately and they aren't cheap. They should just plug in into the HVR-A1P.

If you thought macs were expensive, wait till you start buying video equipment smile

Seriously, there's some absolutely incredible equipment out there, and it's not really that expensive, it's just that you'll end up needing (okay, wanting) so damn much of it.

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

My recommendation would be to buy a used Panasonic 100-B or even 100-A.  Used will allow you to save a bunch of money and that's a great little camera.  I used to own it and I miss using it.

Plus, it's standard DV video, not HDV.  The heck with HDV.  I use HDV because I have to, but I prefer editing with DV.  It's easier.

Do you NEED HD for church videos?  Who knows?

The power of Christ compels you!!!

Seriously though, I love editing my DV, HDV is just as easy, especially with the camera I pointed out. It's about as close to a point and shoot as you get.

Really though, a decent camera with a kick arse tripod and microphone is better than a crap tripod an mic and a great camera.

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

Viewfinders on HDD camcorders are rare. Even more rare are mic inputs. So, what feature do you want the most?

I prefer Sony or Canon camcorders, but I was playing with this one in the store once and LOVED the way if felt in hand (a plus if you do a lot of handheld filming) and it meets a lot of your criteria.

I think the biggest reason I didn't buy this camera was because there was little support at the time for AVCHD formatting.

If you're willing to give up HDD based recording, then I would strongly recommend the camera I did go with, which is this...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5 … order.html

As far as the 3ccds being better than one normal sensor, I've read, I don't remember where, that the 3ccds are not necessarily better than one larger sensor.  Something to do with the surface area of the sensor...the bigger the better, iirc.

Alright, now, who wants to be transistorized?

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

Thank you for your reply. I looked at the cameras that you told me about. I like the Sony the best. I have finally decided that the one sensor of a larger size is just as good or better than the 3ccd.

Isn't it odd that the tape drive is a better quality than the hard drive? Why is that?

I am still leaning on the Sony HDR-SR12. I'll think some more on it.

Thanks,
Jo

Thanks for your reply. I'm concerned about this camera being a PAL. Also, I don't want to put that kind of money into it. But I did like it very much.

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

No problem. I don't own one unfortunately. Been messing with one at Uni. It has been quite easy to use and rather versatile. The lecturer uses it for all his church videos and swears by it.

I'm not sure what the NTSC version of the camera is, but I'm sure it's available. Unfortunately it's not a HDD camera, but in my opinion HDD cameras, although useful are only a pain in the butt.

Tapes, although the older style, do have some strong advantages, especially in quality and ease of use. They also allow for you to archive your footage on magnetic tape rather than DVD. Tape lasts quite a lot longer than DVDs do.

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

I like the tape also, I have an old Panasonic and the quality is pretty good but I need to have a camera that I can have a wireless Mike. It's just my husband wants me to get the HDD because he says someday they will quit making the tape units, that it's going out. I don't know about that though. I'm still studying them though.

Thanks for your input,
Jo

The tapes aren't going anywhere any time soon. VHS is still going strong. Someday will be a long time from now.

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

Well, I bought the Sony HDR-SR12, and now I am looking how to download it to my Intel imac. Do I have to up grade my OXS? I am running Tiger now. Any help would be appreciated.

You should do your research on whether the camera will work or not before you buy it. That being said, according to Apple, all you have to do is purchase iLife '08. iMovie '08 can import AVCHD no problems.

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

The iMac should come with iMovie anyway. Start with iMovie and select NTSC HD. Otherwise look for a format in Final Cut Express that the camera supports. Look for AVCHD I think, else just use Apple Intermediate codec.

You use Firewire to import not USB.

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

I like your name Planely Insane. By the way, Idid do my research. As stated in my earlier post, I said that I have Final Cut Express. I do not like imovie 8.
Thanks anyway.

Re: hd 3cccd camcorders

I renamed iMovie 6? so that I could still use it. Haven't really looked at iMovie 8 much.
