i'm throwing this out there...

2 years ago, this thread would already be five pages long. now, its barely breaking over 20 posts.

what's happened to Mac|Life Forums?

serves Apple right? seriously? the iPhone is potentially one of the most exciting platforms to be involved with as a developer. its called WORLD WIDE DEVELOPER CONFERENCE FOR A REASON.  the iPhone, this device you call a "toy," has such enormous more potential than anything else on the market.

please, for the sake of not sounding like a complete tool, explain how the iPhone is nothing but a toy. seriously, please do. i'm real interested to know. back it up.

ActiveSync Exchange support built-in? 35% of Fortune 500 companies actively working towards complete integration with the iPhone device? yeah, sounds like a toy to me.

go back to your cave with your true blue 68k mac and yearn for the good old days when Apple was a niche market as a whole and no one gave two smurfs about whether the company lived or died. i'll stay in the sun with my intel MBP and iPhone and enjoy the incredible things Apple has done to turn the world on its head and reinvigorate themselves.

Hardware wise, they had to offer GPS but what about the camera?  No increase in megapixels is ok but I was hoping for video recording.  And software-wise, can we please get voice dialing?

Re: WWDC Keynote Live Blog

Yeah it is starting to look like some of the rumor mongers are more innovative than apple these days.

The video conferencing thing has been flying around the internet for months and would have been a huge step forward for the iphone.

One thing someone I was talking to brought up the fact that pricing can keep some of these key features away. I kind of call BS on that. People waited in line for hrs to get the iphone 1.0 at $599 for 4gb of space, sure the price drop is awesome but why not do what they do for the laptops:

If you want an entry level iphone go for the 8gb (macbook)

If you want a mid-level with more features 16gb (macbook pro 15inch)

If you want the big dog top tier - 32gb+ w/ video conference (macbook pro 17inch)

People would have an iphone for each budget just like the ipod did with the nano and the shuffle. Why should the phone cater to the lower end brackets at the suffering of features that people like myself would be willing to pay for.

I would pay $399/$499 for a 32gb iphone with the features it was supposed to have.

I would pay $500 for one, but glad I only need to pay $300 for the 16.

I wonder how much of our perceived lack of expected features is due to the noticeably missing partner in action, AT&T?  I hope they don't become the new Motorola, unable to keep up the pace that Apple sets and slowing innovation.

Edit:

Just noticed an article on Gizmodospeaking to the same issues we're discussing.  They list missing:

A 32GB model
A better camera
More RAM
MMS
A2DP Bluetooth for stereo streaming
A camera on the front for videoconferencing
Video capabilities
Turn-by-turn navigation (will come with a 3rd party app, I'm sure)
The ability to copy and paste

I had forgotten about my annoyance about lack of MMS.

Re: WWDC Keynote Live Blog

WTF

I'm liking the features I see on the new iPhone. Yes, it needs more as jeremiah points out. But Mobile ME???

What in the world were they smoking when that one was approved? I still have a .mac email account because I WANT THE .MAC NAME!!

If they change my email address over this smurf I will be seriously pissed. I keep that email for one reason only - it's a slap in the face of the non-mac users. It identifies me and my preferred operating system effortlessly. Mobile Me and @me.com sound completely utterly stupid.

EDIT: Just read this page: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/migrating/

Towards the end it mentions that you can continue using your @mac.com email addresses, in addition to a new @me.com. That's a relief. Unfortunately, I have ZERO need for the rest of the .mac / .me features, and my email is tacked onto a friends full account. Hopefully they won't remove the additional email addresses feature.

Not to keep ragging on AT&T but have they announced anything separately about their pricing structure for the 3G phones?

Until they uncouple it from a carrier I can't get here (and I don't have to jailbreak) they can stick their phone up their rears.

Indeed, there isn't even an iPhone 3G thread.
As for me I just have anything to say. No MacOS news (10.6, but there isn't much said for the moment) No Mac hardware.. Nothing Macintosh.

The iPhone is all swell, but I've had portable devices that did funny stuff before, and I always got tired of them, so I know the iPhone isn't for me. It's not the nice interface that will change much about that.

.me bah, it's .Mac. I have no calendar, no contact list, no mail synching. Web hosting is better elsewhere.

What is there to debate?
Was there more to debate before?
Is it Apple or is it us?

The iPhone is nothing more than a fancy electronic toy. All these 'new features' it's a frickin cell phone. what are phones for talking! I could easily live with a wired phone line if i had to. because thats what a phone is for, just talking. Unlike computers, which i don't know how you bring 68k macs and mbp into this. I wasn't talking about any of that, separate your apples from oranges and come down off your high horse. I was making a statement about how this phone is becoming the focus at apple, and that they need to get back to business. meaning spread the love and focus back on their great software and hardware, both professional and consumer based.

Honestly with statements like that, no wonder people think you live in a cave.  If you could live without a cell phone than you are out of touch with at least 80% of the population below the age of 30.  Just because YOU could doesn't mean smurf!  YOU are weird.

Sure, maybe you don't have many friends, so not being able to get calls while you're not in your cave and therefore missing out on socializing after school/work etc is not important.  Maybe you like arriving home from the grocery store, just to have to go back again because your spouse realized he/she forgot to put something on the list and couldn't call you to add it.

Take a cell phone away from a teenager for even 1 day and it's torture.  A cell phone is a social necessity for the younger generations.

Aaron_R wrote:

I don't think that it is unreasonable to use a phone for more than "talking".  It can be used to "communicate" in broader terms, using text, videos, pictures etc.  It can also be a gateway to access almost limitless information on the internet from anywhere in the country.  Finally it can be used to store and carry a degree of personal information far beyond what the human brain can handle.  Contacts, Images, Sounds, Directions, Notes, Calendars etc.

I don't think sending an SMS while you're in a meeting and can't talk is using it as a toy.  I don't think using the GPS to get foolproof directions to your job interview so you don't miss it is using it as a toy either.

I know there aren't any roads or anything near your cave but just trust the rest of us on this one.  It's really useful.

Computers were originally just for scientific and mathematic computations!  Things evolve!  Developing phones that do more than make calls makes them toys no more than developing computers that go beyond crunching numbers makes them toys!

My younger brother is 14 and dont use his much or any, so luckily it's not the rule.
It's understandable in urban areas though. (difficulty for meeting for example)
