New Versions of iTouch!?!
With the new iPhone 3G coming out next month will the iTouch be releasing a new version sometime soon?
Will there be new features like camera, memory size, slimmer versions, colors, etc!?!
I will be purchasing a iTouch soon but iam not in any kind of hurry. Iam trying not to waste money if a new version is coming out a lil bit later. Like when i bought my ipod shuffle awhile back. soon after they lowered the price and released more colors.

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
They'll most likely wait until the back to school special is over before upgrading the iPod Touch line (although that isn't a given).

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
So should i wait til next month when the iPhone 3G is released to make sure? Cause the back to school special isnt over until September 15. Which is about the start of my first year in college.

I would wait till the 2.0 software is released ... and then buy the touch from apple ... otherwise you will more than likely be paying 10 bucks for the new software.. (unconfirmed)

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
If the price of the iPod Touch dropped in line with the iPhone that would be enough for me. Canadian prices will obviously be higher than US prices, so the 8GB 3G iPhone will be $249-279 here but if that makes the 8GB iPod Touch come down to $219-239 I might be able consider one.
OK, I'll stop dreaming now.

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
I think the main reason they were able to drop the price of the iPhone is because the carriers will be subsidizing the price of the handset. Don't hold your breath for a significantly cheaper iPod touch.

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
No, I don't really expect the price of the Touch to drop. I'm sure the next update will see capacities move one notch down the price hierarchy but that is probably all we can hope for. Oh well, apparently Apple doesn't need my money.

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
I don't think the price of the touch will drop, either. Initially I thought it would, before I found out that the carriers are "subsidizing" the costs of the iPhone by raising fees $10 for the 3G plan, equating to $240 over a two year contract. So looks like the price will stay on the Touch. At most, I think we'll see increased memory, or, if it gets cheap enough, the 8gb Touch could be at the same pricepoint as the 80gb Classic.

The $10 price was confirmed by Jobs himself during the keynote if that's what you were unsure about. If you were unsure about whether or not the iPod touch will ship with the newer firmware once it is released, I don't see any reason why they would ship with the older version. So, you have a good point there. Qdon should probably wait until the 2.0 firmware is released to save $10 (and possibly more, but probably not).

that there is a good enough reason to old off a month or maybe even more because 8gb or actually even 16gb's is nothing!! 32GB is better but for 499.00 i feel thats a huge rip-off, and with the possibility of them upgrading memory at all in the near or far future it feels like a disappointment when the newer versions come out big time!!!
cause if i spent 500 bucks on something and later on they released a newer one with way more memory for less(not sayin they will) i would be pissed and feel really stupid at the same time!!!!

I know I will be paying for the upgrade ... I am just not sure that the new ones will come with the upgrade (which they should but who knows) ... and if they do come with it ... will the old ones be reduced in price again.

when they release the software update the last time ... the new stock had the update for the same price and the old stock was like 10 or 20 bucks off and didn't have the software update.

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
I would highly doubt any changes in price point or storage sizes before the back to school deal is up, that is to say, the middle of Sept. Apple would probably want to avoid another incident like the one when iPhone prices were slashed early after launch, by selling iPod Touches to new students and then upping the Touch halfway through the deal. If you were going to take advantage of the deal to get your iPod Touch, I think you would still want to wait until the 2.0 update drops, but after that I would think you would be free to get yours whenever. If you were not going to couple it with a new Mac (or were waiting for the next Macbook to drop, like myself) then keep in mind it is unlikely the Touch will see an update until the end of September at the earliest.

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
It looks kind of stupid having the touch at 299 and the iphone at 199, regardless of subsidies. Isn't the base iphone and the base itouch the same thing - one with phone and one without? Or am I missing some spectacular difference between the two?

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
Yes, the base iPhone costs less than a base Touch, and is the same minus phone and camera tech. But, when you buy an iPhone, you are also buying into a two year contract with AT&T. Also, subsidy is different in different areas. I believe O2 and T Mobile in Europe are giving iPhones out for 1 Euro, if you sign up for the highest monthly plan availible. But the economics of the two devices, the iPhone and the iPod Touch, are completely different.

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
I am curious to see what 3rd party apps become available for the Touch. If Firefox and maybe a few other apps I can't think of off the top of my head are ported then the Touch would start to look much more attractive to me.

So, would it make sense to buy an iPhone and use it as an iTouch? I guess the iPhone is heavier? And you get a bonus camera - right?

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
Yeah, actually, the extra $100 up front for the iPod Touch doesn't seem so bad if that is all it costs not to be burdened by a cell phone. Seriously, all I'd use a cell phone for is to tell telemarketers it is bad enough they harass me on my land line 5-10 times per day and to smurf off and stop calling me on my cell phone too and costing me money. Not having to put up with that is worth something to me, maybe even $100. I'll have to give that some thought.

Re: New Versions of iTouch!?!
Not only does the 199 dollar iPhone price only availible with a two year contract, you must also activate your account in store now. To attempt to crack down jailbroken iPhones, Apple is making you activate in stores. This allows them to track your phone usage from the start, and I believe there are some tax things that are tacked on if they have reason to believe you jailbreak your phone. I will try to find a link to all of that.

I did get one set, but it was obviously from some illegal operation (telling me--in Spanish--that I was eligible to play some lottery in Mexico) that they weren't going to let anything as slow as the law stop them.
test, if you are in the US you can always put your phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry. Note that because of a change in the laws you no longer have to re-register after a couple of years: any number so registered is on this registry permanently. I did file a complaint about those above calls here and those calls stopped shortly afterwards.
