Ever Shrinking MacWorld Magazine...
MacWorld has been pestering me to renew my subscription by sending letters and doing that "Your Last Issue" paper jacket covering the magazine. So I looked at what I get in return for my subscription by adding up how many pages of actual "content" (not ads) in their latest magazine and I came up with about 56 Pages of actual content while the rest (about half) is advertisements. I remember when MacWorld was the thickness of a phonebook each month (only slight exaggeration) Maybe MacWorld and other publishers should actually start to include more content making it a value for the customer instead of hassling them to continue subscribing to a shrinking magazine by spending money on "subscription ending" letters, covers etc!
Just my little rant.....

Re: Ever Shrinking MacWorld Magazine...
Did you know there's a Mac|Life magazine? We're not just forums, apparently!
I dunno. 56 pages seems like a lot, or at least comparable to other magazines out there. That's more than half, if we're looking at the same issue. Try counting content pages in one of those chick magazines...sheesh. There's a couple hundred pages straight from the forest and right to the trash.

Re: Ever Shrinking MacWorld Magazine...
I subscribe to MacAddict as well, but my subscription is not "last issued" yet for that one. This is a problem with most magazines (lack of actual content). I guess that if you have have never read ANY magazines before and you pick up a current issue and read it through you may be satisfied with the actual content. If you have been subscribing to/reading these magazines for years/decades it is clear that the content is now sorely lacking (compared to how it used to be (1990's and before) and the publishers are forced to out right beg to keep subscribers.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but this is mine...

Heck, I remember when MAD magazine was ad-free.

Yep, magazines used to be quite thick, indeed. I used to have a copy of PC magazine from the mid 80's -- It was a good two inches thick. I have a comparably thick Computer shopper from the mid-90's (I think it slimmed down relatively recently).

I gotta say, it's hard to keep up with online content. It's stuff that is generally free, immediately up-to-date, and interactive.

I don't see why there isn't an option to subscribe to an online-only version of your favorite magazines. What with all the "green" going around and all it would save some trees.

I tried that for a while. Zinio is garbage.

Re: Ever Shrinking MacWorld Magazine...
I have an issue of MacWorld from 1989. It has the Macintosh SE/30 on the cover. It's a half an inch thick, thicker paper cover, a bit bigger and much more retro. Shame all magazines have shrunk over the years.
Though... what's a magazine anymore? This is the internet age!

Re: Ever Shrinking MacWorld Magazine...
What really bugs me is two days before I received my last issue of MacWorld, one of the feature articles was posted on-line verbatim.
I just make smurf up as I go along.

What was the problem? Not that I doubt you, I only used it a couple of times. But it seemed functional. Was the subscription service b0rked?

It was too much like emulating a paper magazine on a computer. Had they optimized the content for use on a computer instead of making it exactly the same as the print version, my opinion would have been quite different.

We've been getting a magazine for the digital print industry via e-mail that actually has a click on the page interface to graphically turn the page.

I too am in favor of online material. My problem with Mac magazines in general these days is that they focus too much on the iPhone and iPod, not Macs. Online I can skip over this content.

Nice - mind quoting some prices of machines on there? I found an old MacWorld at our camp and I was blown away by how much the Macs and the RAM cost. Unfortunately my mom threw it away.

I stopped buying magazines years ago. They're a total waste of money today. The internet is WAY a head of them in the latest info. Save your money and stop buying magazines.

I agree, print media is going down the toilet but I would take an issue of MacLife over MacWorld any day.
