To iPhone... or not?
So, I'm looking for a new cell phone (possibly the iPhone) and I'm still trying to decide whether or not to get the next one. I KNOW... it's a bit premature, but I'm trying to keep my research to a minimum when the phone comes out so that I can just grab one if I have to...
That said, anyone have any advice on these topics?
1) How much different is it to browse the internet from your iPhone than from your computer? Is there anything that is particularly frustrating?
2) I used to tether my phone to my laptop. I now know this isn't possible (without some MAJOR hacking) with the iPhone currently. Anyone know if it's planned for the 3G iPhone?
3) I was able to find a couple of ringtones that I would like to add to my phone... then it occurred to me - can you put your own ringers on the iPhone? I should just be able to add them to Garage Band and export it as a ring tone, right?
4) Is there any way to connect to the iPhone via Bluetooth? even just to browse it?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Re: To iPhone... or not?
1) It's certainly not an internet replacement, but it's pretty smurfing fabulous when the alternative is having to wait until I get home to figure out what that guys name was that played the cop in that Van Damme movie.
2) Dunno. Seems reasonable, but unlikely.
3) Last I did it, I just changed my m4a extension to m4r and iTunes/iPhone immediately knew it was a ringtone. I think they made it a little tougher, but it's still possible.
4) Not out of the box. Pretty much the only thing the bluetooth does is hook up to an ear piece dealie.
While features are still limited in many ways, I do so love my iPhone. Odd, considering the fact that I've never even liked any of my phones before this one. Mac OS was the solution when I hated windows so I took a risk thinking the iPhone might be the solution to my hatred of cell phones. I was right.

Re: To iPhone... or not?
1) Can't say what the 3G iPhone will be like but currently browsing on the iPhone is good for short bursts. It is like trying to use the internet on dialup. Doable but not exactly painless.
2) Doubt they'll let you tether it but weirder things have happened.
3) If you have Garageband you can turn basically anything into a ring tone free of charge.
4) Yeah, bluetooth support is limited to headsets at the moment. Again, they may change this.

To iPhone or not to iPhone?
Definitely
As for tethering, it can be done.
Here is one method
I believe I saw another somewhere some time ago.
They're all hacks, tho, which may or may not be you.

Re: To iPhone... or not?
Thanks again for all the feedback... One rep I talked to at AT&T today had this to say:
"Yeah, I think that the new iPhone is right around the corner - there's just one problem: Apple still hasn't submitted it to the FCC for approval, so the government will hold it up way past the June 9th release that's been buzzing all over the web. It could be a couple months before it's available."
Any thoughts? I had hoped that my wait would only be another 10 days, but if what he's saying is true - AAAAA! I DON'T WANT TO BE STUCK THAT LONG!

I could be wrong but i don't think the FCC makes submissions public. just approval (or denials) so i don't think he'd know if apple has submitted it or not. it just hasn't been approved.
and it's is submitting an "updated" device quicker and easier than a whole new device?
maybe that's just wishful thinking.
all i know is that i'll be ordering an iphone on june 9th.
or else i'll be an angry angry person.

But look at all the money you're saving!
And you've waited this long, what's another month?

Re: To iPhone... or not?
While browsing on the iPhone, entering text into a web page is pretty frustrating (especially forums).
If Garageband doesn't work for ring tones you might check out iToner from Ambrosia?

Same here except I liked little bits and pieces about a couple of my past phones. I'm still on the fence about the plastic back iPhone. I'm hopeful I'll be able to stick with my original iPhone until next years release? I'm expecting the software releases to correct a lot of my current issues? I also can't justify and extra $10 a month for 3G right now (they're already stretching my breaking point at $60).

Re: To iPhone... or not?
I don't see ATT forcing everyone to get the new iPhone. They don't really care as long as they continue to get your money. Unless you really want 3G or GPS, you're probably better off sticking with your current model. The new plastic backing should be a very good thing. One for sheer durability and the other for reception. I have a MacBook, a friend has a MBP. Mine has a plastic shell, his aluminum with a strip of plastic for the WiFi and BT antennae. I can connect to networks, with decent signal strength, that he can't even see.
The extra $10/month is how you pay back ATT for the iPhone costing $199 or $299 instead of $399 or $499. Personally I hate the notion of subsidized handsets. I'd rather pay the money for the handset up front, then pay monthly for service. Kinda like cable/satellite TV or internet access, etc.
The software update is absolutely essential. It's what will make the iPhone truly ready to compete with Palm and BlackBerry. One annoyance for me is still no stereo BT support - no wireless headphones for music. My guess is that since BT drains the battery, it's a feature that's been purposely left out. As for us, our current contract doesn't expire until early next year. We're contemplating iPhones, but hopefully by that time some Android handsets will be shipping and we can see how well those function in comparison. It's not the iPhone that gives pause, it's ATT.
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.
