Networking help please
I have tried this multiple times with doing searches (google and inside the forums) and I am still unable to network my laptop (powerbook 1.33Ghz, 10.4.10) and the desktop upstairs (custom AMD running Windows XP SP2). I have a copy of Ubuntu 7.05 on the machine upstairs also and have no problems connecting to it when booted into linux. problem is rarely booted into linux unless I'm using it.
here's my setup
Windows XP box connected to Linksys wireless router (WRT54G) through ethernet (ip 192.168.1.103).
Powerbook connected through wireless to router (ip 192.168.1.101)
File sharing is turned on for both machines with a couple different folders shared on the Windows box.
OS X is setup for Windows sharing, file sharing,
Built in firewall in XP is turned off
I want to set it up to transfer files between the two machines. I haven't even been able to connect to either way to one of the machines. I have looked at countless websites and done the step by step procedures and nothing works for me. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this up the way I want it? Would be so much easier if my roommate had a mac.
update:
When I got home I grabbed an ethernet cable and connected my Powerbook directly to the router. Just incase it was a problem doing it over the air. Still no go on connecting either way
This is really starting to aggravate me tremendously, should be easier than this.
update:
Able to ping in both directions with less than 1 ms per ping

Re: Networking help please
It certainly seems to be a firewall issue. Even though you have the Windows firewall off.
Do you have another firewall?
Some Internet Security program?
Is Windows Zero Configuration turned on? Or off?

So I went through all the programs in the menu and a firewall program that is installed by Nvidia was turned on. Didn't even know that there was one on the system. Comes with the drivers for XP for the motherboard. Got that turned off and now everything is working smoothly.
I also turned off the Windows Zero Configuration; not a windows person never even heard of that one before.

Good that your file sharing is working for you.
That Windows Zero Configuration thing is the same as Bonjour on OS X. Might as well turn it back on to make future network configuration easier.

what do you do? I have my roomate with his macbook in the one room, me with my ibook in my room and we are both connected to the internet through a dsl modem/router. He is using it wirelessly and I am connected directly through ethernet. How would he mount my Shared folder on his desktop? Thanks.

Re: Networking help please

And the dead shall walk again...
but to answer your question:
Use the Go menu (Finder)
Connect to Server...
Browse to your friend's Mac
Select the Public folder (not Shared).
Shared is for users on the same machine.
Public is for users on the same network.
Not sure what you are trying to share but if you are sharing photos and music they should show up in iPhoto and iTunes automatically once the applications preferences are set to allow sharing.
