A few iPhone questions
I know the iPhone won't be released till the 11th of July, but can I go and buy it now? Where is the best place to buy it, at an apple store or at an AT&T store? Also, did the service plans for the iPhone change? Where can I see a list of the prices? Thanks.

Re: A few iPhone questions
Not being released until the 11th means you can't buy it before the 11th. The only places you'll be able to buy it on the 11th (and for some time after) are AT&T stores and Apple Stores. You will not be able to buy it online. Buying it from an Apple Store will probably be more pleasant but will also have longer lines, probably.
As far as service plans, the iPhone no longer is special. It will have the same service plans as every other phone. That means the data plan is going up by $10 a month. The voice plan remains the same. Text messages will now cost extra ($5 for 200 messages). A leaked memo says that the discounts (IRU, CRU) will now work with the iPhone contracts though. So depending on your discount (from your employer) the plan may actually cost less than the current iPhone plan. AT&T has yet to actually announce this change, as they think they're cute or something.
The specifics of the pricing of the plan are also not released. The subsidized price of the 8gb phone is $199 and the 16gb is $299. AT&T said they'll formally announce the pricing closer to launch.

Re: A few iPhone questions
Thanks NAG.
I just got this from an AT&T service rep:
The new 3G iPhone is scheduled to launch on July 11 2008. With a two year agreement, the price of an 8GB iPhone will be $199; the 16GB will be priced at $299. Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting as low as $39.99 a month. More information will be available soon.
Texting has not been released yet.
I forgot to ask. I will be changing from another provider (Verizon) to get the iPhone. What is the process for this? Is it smooth or are there any glitches? I will be able to keep my current phone number, right?

You will be able to keep your current number. Porting the number over is relatively painless (although it may take a bit longer to activate the phone). As long as your Verizon contract is up it should be easy to swtich.

Re: A few iPhone questions
DO NOT CANCEL YOUR VERIZON CONTRACT TILL YOUR NUMBER HAS BEEN PORTED OVER. When you cancel your contract your number goes back in the pool and makes it very difficult if not impossible to get it back.

Do you remember where you saw this? And if not, do you know where I can find the link for employer discounts? The reason I'm asking is that I know this option is available through my employer because I got the emails from AT&T last year offering them to me. At the time I still had a year left on my Sprint contract and I think I just deleted them.

Don't worry about it. I found it. Looks like my company gets a 15% discount. I hope this applies to the new iPhone. It isn't as good as the 23% I get with Sprint but it would be better than nothing
