Wow. Just wow.

Okay, so my G5, which had Photoshop 7 on it, broke recently (fried logic board). Now I've been using my parents' newer intel iMac, which is incompatible with Photoshop 7. As an amateur photographer, I've been using iPhoto for my adjustment needs, but I like to put thin black borders (thinner than the matte tool fd's Flickr toys can create) around some of my images. So, I need a simple, preferably cheap or free stopgap program (until I can find some affordable means of obtaining Photoshop...) that can draw a straight line of a controllable thickness, and for some reason I'm having a really hard time finding one. I've tried Gimp but found it incredibly annoying (the instructions I found for drawing a straight line didn't work, and neither does the Undo function, it seems). If anyone could help me find such a program, it would be wonderful. Thank you.

Yep. GraphicConverter can even batch images with a border or margin of any pixel width you choose. GC can batch entire folders, selected images or single images and you can save your settings for easy repeats.

I am pretty sure you need to pay for GC to activate the automation. I'm not sure because I have been a registered user since 1995 so I dont actually know how it works in demo mode.
I strongly recommend taking a half hour or so and really giving the GC users manual a good looking over. GC is  extremely powerful but few people actually know all the things it can do.
It doesnt help tat the interface is a bit thick at first glance. GC has accumulated so many abilities over the last 15 years or so that it has kinda grown into a bit of a monster. A good monster but a monster none the less.
So there is a learning curve to climb. The best plase to start is to open a folder of images in the browser, that mode directly exposes more tools than any other.

Yeah, I can find the border feature but it doesn't seem to be on the list of automated commands. However, the simple fact that I can make a border (and much more easily than I ever could in Photoshop) is a point of relief for me.

I'm pretty sure it is. I tried burning it (and all the resource files) to a disc and it wouldn't open. I'm going to try again now that I have everything in one place, though.

Re: Wow. Just wow.

I love GIMP myself, but people used to Photoshop really seem to hate it.  Have you tried the GIMPshop version, which uses the same codebase but changes all the dialogs and menus to match Photoshop?

Go to the Batch menu at the top of the browser, pull it down and at the bottom is "Define Batch". Select that and in the window that pops up look for the "Add/Delete Margin", add that to the batch list, in the feilds for defining the margin positive numbers add a margin to the outside of the picture, negative number make a border inside the image.

Re: Wow. Just wow.

A hint for an easier way to make a border: just make the canvas x pixels bigger. I'm sure most basic editing apps will offer that ability.

The other day I saw a designer dropping guides and selection marquees to fill for a border. I just don't understand how "designers" can completely distance themselves from the software and say that this is stuff only production people know. confused

Re: Wow. Just wow.

You could also have a look at pixelmator, it's very nice apart from a slightly unreadable interface. Very much a photoshop clone.

Re: Wow. Just wow.

Uh- I think you can probably pick up a copy of CS2 Photoshop fairly cheap these days and the return will certainly be worth it.

I print for people as a living and whenever I receive anything "designed" by anything other than Adobe's products I just cringe. I'm no fanboy but Adobe is reliable and consistent.

I would agree but unless someone is preping graphics for the press Photoshop is likely going to massive overkill. Particularly when such a excellent subset of Photoshops features is available in Elements.
I keep checking TheGIMP about once a year but as long as they stick with that retarded multi-window, context menu centric UI I doubt I will ever find it very inviting. Its kinda like a car that you steer with your feet and operate the brakes and accelerator with your hands. Everything is all assbackwards.
