iPhone, laptop and internet

I need wireless internet for my iBook. I will be getting an iPhone. Can the iPhone be used to get the internet to my laptop? I'm sure that's will be too good to be true, so how do I integrate it all together?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Sorry, wrong forum, would someone kick it over to the right one?

Re: iPhone, laptop and internet

It's theoretically possible, but Apple and especially ATT will do everything in their power to make sure you can't. ATT wants you to purchase a separate laptop card and an additional data plan. To be fair, it's not just ATT, all the wireless companies want to extort more money out of y ou.

That's what I thought. I may as well go ahead and get a data plan now, any suggestions?

T-Mobile will let you use a blackberry as a wireless modem at no extra charge.

Google "iPhone Mac tethering" and you can find some guides (Jailbreaking required). Its not a hard process but its not automated either, so you need to follow 8 or 9 steps every time. Results aren't too good either.

Re: iPhone, laptop and internet

To piggyback on what Steyr and McAddict said, I've unlocked my iPhone for use on T-Mobile and can tether it to my computer using BlueTooth to browse the internet when necessary.  If you want to stay with AT&T, jailbreaking will allow you to also tether it but I've no practical experience on how well it works and there is the risk that AT&T can/will find out and spank you.

Re: iPhone, laptop and internet

Doesn't sound like its worth the hassle. I think I'll take a plan from AT&T, at least I might get it all on one bill.
Thanks for all the replies.
