Remember all those DOS games you wanted to play?

Apparently someone took it upon themselves to get rid of the nasty DOS command prompts in DOSBox and make it a simple plug and play operation. All you do is put in the CD and double click the DOSinstall.exe and let boxer do the rest. I used it just a couple minutes ago to install MegaRace and so far its working perfectly. I know it sounds like I'm advertising it, but its freakin awesome! Now between Parallels and Boxer there is hardly a PC application I can't run!

one thing I was wondering though, anyone know if you can install Windows 95 into dosbox? There are lots of good games that require Windows 95 because they won't run in DOS and won't run in XP either. I still have a Windows 95 install disc...

I hope most reading this know that many DOS games already run under XP in DOS emu mode.
The trickiest generally aren't the earliest, but those from the mid-90s- sound cards often were very finicky about resource allocation (IRQs and DMAs). Late '80s- early '90s games without (or with only rudimentary) sound support fare the best.

The problem I've had running old DOS games is video issues. Serious Sam, for instance was jumpy and unplayable.
I also tried the Windows version of Deus Ex under Win XP bootcamped on my Intel iMac because it won't play my Mac version. Horrible bit depth, jumpy and unplayable.
This might help the DOS game, but is there anything I can do so I can play Doos?

It should play fine under XP. To check, I installed it awhile back thusly, and it did. Better than ever, in fact, 1600x1200, 32 bit color, FSAA/AF 4x/8x.
I'd suspect a driver, hardware or .ini/.cfg file issue. Since widescreen displays were nearly unheard of when DE came out in 2000, you might start at the WSF's DE page (not Bob's Page 
).

Serious Sam wasn't DOS. The first was out around '99-2000. Sure you didn't confuse it with the likes of Duke Nukem?

Yeah, I was fooling around with a bunch of old games at the same time and got them mixed up. I may not have actually tried to run any of the DOS games yet.
SS was Win 95, so it's the same era as Doos. I probably am having general video driver issues. STALKER and other newer games run just fine so I haven't pursued it very hard. I did have to install some sort of Cyrus driver so I could run Gears of War, so I SHOULD be up to date on that. I'll look into those suggestions in that thread.

I've been using Boxer for a while now. My favorite feature is the ability to make games into application bundles. Just add the .boxer extension to the game folder, and double click. You'll be asked to locate the appropriate game executable (or bat file). Now the game will look like a regular Mac application.

Well, I applied the new drivers and Deus Ex looks better (still a little mottled) but it runs too fast, so it's unplayable. The NPCs trot back and forth and outgun me every time.

The glitchy graphics are possibly due to the special Boot Camp drivers. The fast pace could be something else. Try running the game in Windows 98 compatibility mode (right click the executable and click properties).

In Boot Camp or Boxer? Game running too fast is very DOS-like behavior. Utilities like Mo-Slo were invented to run old games on systems much faster than they were ever intended for, as DOS lacked a Windows sort of event timer. All a very fast CPU and sytem should do in DX is smooth the framerates, altho I have heard of UT running too fast. Haven't experienced either myself, even at downright silly framerates checked with vsync off.

I made the changes needed to run wide, and aside from a few minor issues like subtitle readability in the opening cutscene in a game never intended to run wide, it looks like it should play fine. All shiny.
How did we ever live with such square heads and pointy lips, tho?

You can make an OS X version of Deus Ex with Cider. I just did this with the Deus Ex GOTY, and it works like a charm. I don't know whether or not it's cool to post instructions (I think it violates the Cider EULA or something) but I think you can figure it out on your own. If not, give me a PM. I'll give you a hint, though: You'll need the OS X version of Spore Creature Creator (demo will suffice). You'll also need to run through the initial setup in Windows (Cider hates dialogs). Google should tell you the rest.

User, you're running DX thru Boot Camp in D3D, right? OpenGL is not as good, unless you're trying out TruForm, which I'm sure you're not.
As for speed, perhaps enabling curved surfaces would induce some needed performance penalty as well as improving the overall look.

Yes. BC in XP on a 2.4 Ghz 20" iMac.
I looked at the options and I thought I had all the switches thrown to full. Is what you are talking about a command line advanced option? I have a vague memory of that being the case.
