Screen Resolution & Aspect Ratio

I am a new user of Boot Camp, running Vista Home Premium w/SP1 on a 3 GHz MacPro tower with a 30" Cinema display.  Both the screen resolution and aspect ratio are great with VMware Fusion, but with Boot Camp the resolution is too small and the aspect ratio is not correct (everything appears too large, and stretched from side-to-side).  I have distorted audio with Fusion, so I would prefer to get Boot Camp working so that the screen presentation is correct.  The only other issue is file sharing, but using Paragon appears to be a viable alternative.

Any ideas on how to correct this would be really appreciated!

(I am a die-hard Mac person, and have been for years.  However, there are several pieces of software that are only available for PeeCee users, so I finally surrendered.)

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Displays -> (right-most tab that I forget the name of) and drag the slider all the way to the right. Keep in mind that this will also change the VMWare Fusion resolution when you boot that instead of Boot Camp.

Re: Screen Resolution & Aspect Ratio

OK, thanks!

I finally found it under Start Menu > Control Panel > Personalization > Display Settings, and the slider is already all the way to the right, at 1600 X 1200.  Unfortunately, my display looks great at 2560 X 1600!  Fusion allows me to do this, but not with Boot Camp.

I have a feeling this might be related to the incorrect loading of the graphics driver - would that make sense?  Vista lists the monitor as "Generic PnP Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter", but I have a GeForce 8800 GT graphics card.  Whenever I try to load in a different graphics driver, I hit a dead end.  Could I get it via selection of the D:\ drive with the Leopard install disc inserted?

The other thing that is goofy about my installation is the audio, which led me to Boot Camp initially.  My Vista installation using Fusion has distorted audio, and the audio driver is a "Creative Audio PCI (ES1371, ES1373)(WDM)".  However, the audio using Boot Camp is a "Realtek High Definition Audio", and it sounds great.  When I tried to load the Realtek driver into the Fusion installation, however, it gave me a C10 error code, and indicated that it could not be loaded.

I'm kind of frustrated, since I know just enough to get myself into trouble.  But, with Fusion I have an installation where the sound is horrible, and with Boot Camp I have an installation with inadequate video and no way to share files with OS X unless I throw some more money at the computer and buy something like Paragon.

Thanks for your help - any other ideas?

Ah. Yes, installing drivers are important tongue

Put the leopard disk in, and run the installer, it'll install all your needed drivers. Then you'll be able to get things working correctly.

Also, don't try to install any drivers in VMWare Fusion; it has it's own drivers to install (Menu -> Virtual Machine -> Install VMWare Tools...)

Re: Screen Resolution & Aspect Ratio

Well, thanks again, but I have no good results.

The first time I attempted to install the nVIDIA driver from the Leopard disc, I got the following error message:

"The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware.  Setup will now exit."

The second time I got a different error message:

"Setup detected that the operating system in use is not Windows Vista [32 bit].  This setup program and its associated drivers are designed to run only on Windows Vista [32 bit].  The installation will be terminated."

Since I purchased this Windows Vista Home Premium w/SP1 32 bit system just several weeks ago, I am getting disgusted with the whole scenario.  I initially registered the software and installed it via my Fusion account, but I am running in the 30-day initial setup time in the Boot Camp account.  Could this be why it refuses to recognize my Boot Camp usage?  Incidentally, how do I register the software so that I can run it in both Fusion and Boot Camp?

And yes, I recognize that VMware tools insists on loading its own drivers, but in this case the Creative Audio driver that is installed gives me distorted audio that makes my skin crawl. The Realtek driver that is installed in Boot Camp sounds just great.

Thanks again for trying to help!

Re: Screen Resolution & Aspect Ratio

Well, I am happy to report success!  I went to the nVidia website and downloaded the latest driver to support my GeForce 8800 GT card.  After installation, the display is just marvelous!  And, the Windows Experience Index base score is now 5.1 - prior to this, it was 1.0!  big_smile

Based upon the great audio and video I am now experiencing, this makes the decision easy to concentrate on my Boot Camp setup instead of Fusion.

Now I need to investigate software which will make it possible to share files between Vista and OS X.  confused

Additionally, what procedure must I follow in order to authorize Vista to be used in two separate installations on the same computer (Fusion and Boot Camp)?  I initially registered my copy of Vista on the Fusion installation, and installed it under the 30-day trial period on my Boot Camp partition (on the same computer).  Can someone please nudge me in the right direction on this one?  confused

When running Boot Camp, Vista is presented with your real audio hardware. Fusion presents virtualized audio hardware to Vista. In this case, the Creative PCI audio card, because everything under the sun supports Creative stuff. I'd recommend posting on the Fusion forums to figure out how to get audio working properly in Vista, if install the VMWare Tools didn't fix the issue.

You can install MacFUSE and NTFS-3G on OS X to read/write NTFS partitions. There's also some software for Windows that can read/write HFS+ partitions.

As for Vista in Boot Camp, just activate it with your CD Key. You get a certain number of activations, so you should be okay.
