ipod classic and ipod Touch

Been wondering if any body thinks that Apple will Rev the Classic to better then 160 gigs ? I have a 160 classic and I love it just for its huge storage, I have heard people rumor that the 160 will be the last of the Hard drive based Machines ? anybody have a idea ? I also heard rumors that the Touch might go as large as 32 or even 64 gigs. Was just wondering if anybody else has heard anything along these lines, also intrested in which iPod you are using. Anyway look forward to hearing from you guys.

Re: ipod classic and ipod Touch

If there are updates and changes, I wouldn't expect them until around September or so.  Maybe they'll make some changes to the Touch around the same time as the expected iPhone updates in order to keep the two models competitve.

Jumping to 160GB for the Classic last year was a pretty huge jump.  Maybe they'll cram a little more in there this year.  It's hard to predict.

As for me, I have a 4th gen that pretty much sits in a drawer.  It's fully functional, except for the fact that the battery won't hold a charge.  I can use it as an external hard drive, or to play music if I have an external battery pack attached.  I guess I'm just too lazy/cheap to get the battery replaced.

I also have a 5.5 gen 80GB that I got when the 4th gen wouldn't hold the charge anymore.  I wanted the larger (and color) screen real estate, and the higher capacity.

I also have an 8GB 3rd gen Nano which I really love.  Very convenient when I don't want the size and weight of the regular iPod.  It's also incredibly durable.  I've had it since late September, haven't put it in any kind of case, and the face and screen are still totally scratch free.

Re: ipod classic and ipod Touch

I have been looking for a good Touch case, any suggestions. I'm looking at the Griffin iClear, it looks nice, hard plastic, but open screen. If I don't get a screen protector, will the screen get scratched easily. I also like the silicon ones, but it sucks that cases are 20 bucks.

No, its extremely scratch resistant.

I have a 4th gen, 20GB, hardwired to my car and controlled through my head unit. The only time it leaves my glovebox is when I update it.

I also have a 16GB Touch that I use primarily as a PDA, sometimes surf the web, check e-mail, or use the calculator function.

Can't wait for July 11th!

Touch has a 32 model.  As for updates, I would doubt we will see Touch updates before the end of the student back to school deal (Sept. 15) however I do think it likely that the Classic and Touch will see revisions before the end of the year.  As for making the Touch competitive with the new 3G iPhone, I would say that current offerings already are.  Yes, the iPhone is cheaper, but you also have to tie yourself to a two year contract with At&T.  New iPhones will all be activated in store as well, further assuring that the contracts will make you pay up.

Re: ipod classic and ipod Touch

I have a 16Gb iPhone, which, well, I use as a phone. And as a PDA. I also use it as my primary music player and for downloading YouTube videos (thanks MXTube!)

I also have a 20Gb U2 Edition iPod, which has a good battery still, but doesn't see much use.

Finally, I also have a 1st Gen 4Gb Nano, which I use with my Nike Plus kit (which doesn't work too well for me, btw). The Nano is in like new condition... I love the slim form factor.

Re: ipod classic and ipod Touch

This may be a case where newer technology will outpace the old. There are rumors of even larger solid-state storage, so the main reason why the 160 GB iPod classic will be the last one using a hard drive is that the next generation of the iPods will be exclusively solid-state storage, say, a 256 or 512 GB iPod for the largest.

With increased production of computers with solid-state drives like the MacBook Air, the prices will go down as well. You might see such prices if Apple were to release such models right NOW, but next year? Would you be willing to spend a buck per GB for those iPods?

Re: ipod classic and ipod Touch

Regarding the question about an iPod Touch case:

I bought a rubberized skin to keep the back from getting scratched and it's all the protection that's needed, IMHO.  It also keeps it from sliding around but doesn't interfere at all with the function.  Oh, and it didn't cost much.

I would highly recommend the iSkin Touch, though it's a bit pricey if you balk at $20.  It's very sleek and it doesn't make the iPod look fat.  It has a nice grip on the back and a removable belt clip.  It even comes w/ a screen protector.  It even comes in different colors, but what doesn't these days?  I got the black one.
