'Metal Gear Solid: The Movie?'

Not really, but...

Metal Gear Solid: The Movie?

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots may have hit stores today to a 21-gun salute of rave reviews online, but a lingering source of controversy is the list of restrictions that publisher Konami sent out with review copies last week.
According to net scuttlebutt and comments in reviews like the one posted at IGN, Konami forbade reviewers from mentioning install times and the length of the game's cutscenes. Which sort of makes you wonder about the credibility of these launch reviews, especially since the "cutscene" epilogue is, if the rumors are at all accurate, a full 70-minute movie detailing the end of Solid Snake's career. Gee, that sounds like fun to sit through.

Is it any wonder that the gaming press is continually derided by gamers? Crap like this sure isn't going to boost anybody's credibility.

At least it wasn't directed by Uwe Boll... was it? http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/worry.gif

Anyone here get it?

Re: 'Metal Gear Solid: The Movie?'

Since the only possible time I could play it is this summer, inbetween semesters, I'm borrowing a PS3 to play it in the two week window I have: July 1st to 16th.  If I can't beat it in that window then... I'll eat my hat.

I'm sure somebody else around here has a PS3 and the will to play this.  Right?

...right?

Re: 'Metal Gear Solid: The Movie?'

Its pretty good. Alot of movie time when your just starting out. The real reason i got it was for Metal Gear Online though. While buggy i can see it replacing CoD4 as my game of choice.

Re: 'Metal Gear Solid: The Movie?'

Guess thats why it needed so much space on the Blu-ray. I don't mind tho, always liked the old games that made you feel more like you were part of a movie. Ahhh I miss Rebel Assault and Wing Commander! big_smile

Someone's making a game that claims to be in the mold of WC and Freelancer. I'll see later if I can dig it up.

It was at Firingsquad, I remember. Dig back thru their news a week or two and it'll be there.

Found it, Dark Horizon by Paradox Games. Looks like a wait and see title.

If they can deliver the experience like WC and Starlancer where it tries to put you in the midst of the story then alright. That means no cheesy text with voice over mission files. Gotta be pure CG actors or real life cut scenes. Also can't go overboard adding extra features to make kids who have no idea what WC was go oooo. Make it straightforward and pure. None of the Freelancer crap where it plays more like Escape Velocity meets Hitman. No more appeasing toddlers who can't sit still for more than 5 mins.

Re: 'Metal Gear Solid: The Movie?'

I got a chance to try it, and it feels really refined. The controls retain the depth of Snake Eater, while not feeling nearly as clunky.

The game has a visual tone somewhere between Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater: The nano-punk style of the first two games is back, but they tone it down from the environments quite a bit. That is, we're seeing amazing tech, but in more real world locations than say, a giant orange hexagon in the ocean.

Lots more guns. Lots.

And they somehow got Apple on-board for product placement (not that I'm complaining). In-game iPod. Even emulates the click wheel.

Cool. So the PC port/version/relative is when? 'Thy Dungeonman' is getting a bit old; I've had Ye Scroll. Hey...

the click wheel

YeScrollWheel? smile

Re: 'Metal Gear Solid: The Movie?'

The first in-game podcast talks about how they got the iPod in MGS4

goes something like this:

Kojima Productions [KP]: Hey Apple do you like Metal Gear?
Apple: Yes, why?
KP: We will let you see and play it early...
Apple: AWESOME! .... wait... whats the catch?
KP: Oh you let us use your iPod and... other Apple products in the game.
Apple: Only if they aren't destroyed or look bad.
KP: Ok, thanks, bye

Hey, if only Raiden and the Snakes have them they should be safe enough.

Raiden's cyborg armor is an Apple Product, I'm sure.

That explains the white blood.

Re: 'Metal Gear Solid: The Movie?'

Xplay's review flat out warned everyone of the install and cutscene times, but said they didn't seem to hurt the game.  I'll be trading GTA4 for MGS4 soon as exams are over

Gamefly sent it to me today.  Despite the fact that I've picked up WoW again, I'm *still* excited.  Here's to hoping it's fun!
