I am on the go
Folks-
In two weeks I will be leaving Saudi Arabia. I will leave my 20" iMac behind with a friend, if I get a new job and return, he will give it back, otherwise it is a gift. Just too much trouble to travel with.
When I get back to the States, I will get a new MacBook, or maybe a Windows laptop.
Is there anything not-obvious I ought to keep in mind when transferring files from the iMac's drive to my portable drive to take back to the States? I would hate to get home and discover that some important files were still in Saudi.

I detect a pretty interesting story.
The Fat32 bit is one thing to consider.
Another thing to consider might be replacing the iMac's internal drive, taking the old one with you, and using the user migration assistant when you get your new machine.

If you got yourself an external HD, you could clone the iMacs drive on it using super duper, or make a disk image (with Disk Utility) The .dmg is good as you could clone it back to your eventual new mac when booted on the MacOSX dvd.

Oh, oh. This sounds complex. How do I format an (empty) HD as FAT32? Ype slowly, I am stupid.

Open Disk Utility, select the drive you want to format in the list. Click on the erase tab, under format options select MS-DOS(Fat). Then hit the format button.
iMac C2D, 2.0 GHz, OS X 10.5.5, 2.5 GB Ram.

OK, I will do it in the next couple of days.
From my main hard drive I will need documents, my desktops, what else? Where are my Safari bookmarks?
Can I (legally) take my MS Office original discs to the new machine?

yep ... just don't leave it installed on the old one.
