Dedicated Graphics on Macbook Possible?
Do you guys think Apple will ever make a Macbook with a dedicated graphics chip? I'm seeing more and more 12-14" notebooks with the 8400GS chip in them. Maybe Apple could stick it on the higher end Macbook?

Re: Dedicated Graphics on Macbook Possible?
It's theoretically possible. Dell and HP manage to ship consumer notebooks with dedicated graphics as an option. But then how would Apple get you to pay almost twice the price for the MBP?
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

iBooks had dedicated graphics correct? Sure they weren't the best, but still dedicated

Re: Dedicated Graphics on Macbook Possible?
Integrating graphics into core logic is a longtime trend, and is cheaper. I wouldn't look for a change there.
Add-on graphics via one of the high-speed port types might be possible in future, as on the PC, but drivers could be a problem.

"Integrated graphics" will keep getting better. I've heard good things about the last one in Macbooks. Integrated or not, I understand that hardcore gamers just don't get lower-end computers.

By continuing to make them with larger screens...

But Apple designed its own chipsets and didn't want to have to design their own GPUs too. Dedicated graphics on the PPC macs was the cheapest option.

big gripe that modern apple compacts do not have card slots. that would have solved the graphics thing with many people. but then there is the problem with drivers.

An ExpressCard slot on a Macbook wouldn't solve the issue of a dedicated GPU at all.

Huh, they actually ended up releasing that. I guess it would work... if it didn't cost $550, at which point you are well on your way to a Macbook Pro, which would have better... everything. Including GPU, since it wouldn't be limited by the PCIe 1x interface.

I searched but all I saw was vapor. Do you have an actual price or place where it can be purchased? Also, since it isn't portable AND requires an external display is it really practical? Wouldn't it be cheaper and more future-proof to simply build a PC to use for gaming?

to booksley- i didnt say it was practical, but a fix for compact class notebooks.
to frankly- read booksley's comment, and wikipedia is a start.

Like I said, vapor. Even the official asus site doesn't mention pricing or how you would actually get one: http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=11426
If it actually ends up costing $500 I don't think many people would consider that a "fix for compact class notebooks." I thin they would put that $500 toward an actual gaming machine. Since it completely obliterates the portable aspect of the notebook computer there is no reason not to simply take the $500 and get a PC with it.
So, realistically, how would having a PC card slot help a MacBook expand its graphics?

Re: Dedicated Graphics on Macbook Possible?
it would help because some people would just like a small macbook with a graphics card, but you obviously do not understand.
practical or not some people dont want a dell xps 13 incher. so, dont go crazy on me getting all technical cuz a "pc card" slot?
if it is so stupid, why does it exist? cuz "SOME" people may like it, and you are not one of them. like a usb toaster.

I'm not sure where the hostility is coming from but I didn't say you shouldn't get one if you want one. I was just adding a small dose of reality. You beat Booksley over the head because he hadn't heard of this vaporware item. You listed it as if everyone should know about it. Second, if people would like a small MacBook with a graphics card then how does this solve that problem? This device has almost the same volume as the MacBook itself. Not to mention the power supply and the external display you need.
I have no idea what your statement about me going crazy getting all technical means.
Finally, it doesn't exist. Please provide the link where I can buy one. It was originally announced a year and a half ago and yet I still can't buy one. It was "officially released" over a month ago and yet I still can't buy one.
