Microsoft update not playing nice w/ZoneAlarm
PUNTERS who use the ZoneAlarm security package might not want to install MS update KB951748.
According to several news groups, the first thing you will notice after running the update is that your internet connection dies as KB951748 made changes to the networking files that Zonealarm doesn't like. It then decides to block everything just to be safe.
You can get around the problem by setting the Internet Zone Security permission slider from high to medium and that will give you your connection back but that is not really a good idea if you want high security.
Sniffing around the forums we found similar advice although, apparently, the best bet is to reset the ZoneAlarm database.

Re: Microsoft update not playing nice w/ZoneAlarm
I heard a little bit about this a couple hours after it was installed, and uninstalled it to be on the safe side before I found out it only affected Zone Alarm users.
Will XP detect that it is missing and tell me, or do I need to run whatever is XP's equivalent to Software Update? I don't have SP 3 installed yet either (that is going to be released a few hours from now. Will XP pick up on the missing security patch like OS X does?

Yes, it'll pick up the missing security update if you run Windows Update.

Zonealarm fixes glitch caused by Microsoft patch
Revives dead Internet connections
SECURITY VENDOR Check Point Software has issued a fix for its Zonealarm personal firewall products that revives Internet connections disabled by a Microsoft security patch released a few days ago.
...
Checkpoint advises that users might have to uninstall the Microsoft patch to restore their Internet connections before they can download the fix to Zonealarm. It also said reducing ZoneAlarm's security level to "medium" might also restore Internet connections even if the Microsoft patch has not been removed. µ
