Re: AT&Ts official 3G iPhone info (sucks)
I just decided to open a new account with them. I was on a family plan but left that for verizon since I needed more minutes (1350 anytime min)
I am now looking at the unlimted minutes plan from AT&T but its kind of BS because its $129.99 for the unlimted min and mobile net/visual voicemail etc and then an additional $20 for the unlimted txt messages I need. AT&T has the absolute worst service plans around when I look at sprint and verizon as to who offers more in their unlimited package...which is what I need because I average about 1200 min a month and over 5k txt messages.
If the iphone was not so amazing..and the only phone on the block to have 16gb of storage (my motorola q has less than 1gb) I would seriously stay with Verizon as my provider.

I bought an iPhone on day one.
A month ago it drowned in a capsized boat incident.
I decided to buy [but not subsidize] a POS Nokia to hold me over until the 3G iPhone.
If I have to pay more than the 199/299 price, I'm going to kill somebody.

The folks at iFixIt have posted a preliminary disassembly of the iPhone 3G. They flew to New Zealand so they could pick one up at 12:01 am local time.

Here is a semi random question... With so many people moving to the 3G iPhone... will less older gen models equate to faster EDGE speeds since there will be less users?

Nope. It's not the traffic that's the bottleneck.

Plus I doubt most version 1 folks are running out to version 2. Not all areas have AT&T 3G, the pricing is annoying others and some are using T-Mobile and will and see what the unlocked (hacked or supported) options are.

Re: AT&Ts official 3G iPhone info (sucks)
I am such an idiot. I truly wanted to avoid buying the new iPhone for at least several months to see if either Apple releases an unlocked phone or it can be unlocked through other means. But since it seems my subconscious is working against me, now I'll be chained to AT&T and their nickel and dime no tethering service/plan.
I was on my way home from work. My iPhone was running low so I plugged it into the adapter I bought for my Nano. The iPhone said it wouldn't work with this adapter but since I only wanted to recharge it, not play music, I ignored it. When I got home, the phone was still working so I thought nothing of it. Now it seems I physically bricked it. I'm in for it from my wife. Not only do I constantly lecture her about using the right adapter for the right device (something she doesn't appreciate since it's my fault there are millions of adapters laying around the house) but if I was to upgrade, she was supposed to get the old iPhone. I'm half tempted to pretend I bought the more expensive iPhone, buy two cheaper ones instead and bluff it out
But since she does the finances, she'd catch me
Oh well.
Hard reboot and I'm back baby!

Well, I was gonna buy a new iPhone, but I failed a room inspection yesterday (yay being in the military) so I'm not allowed off-base this weekend. Ugh.

Remember to see if you can get a military/government discount and ask if you can get a year only contract. I'm not sure about AT&T but I was able to get both via T-Mobile. Unfortunately last year, I believe AT&T exempted the iPhone from any discounts.

But pottymouth had the real answer: the data transfer rate for the EDGE network is abysmally slow. Originally it had a throughput of under 60 Kbps (sometimes as low as 8 Kbps), but last year on the day of the iPhone release (June 27, 2007) there was a significant bump to as much as 700 Kbps (although a more realistic throughput was about 200 Kbps).
