I was gonna drop out of the race so THIS SCHMUCK would have a chance?
Barack Obama recently made some awfully uninformed, ignorant statements about late-term abortions and under what circumstances he thinks the procedure is justified. So disappointing.

When will these politicians ever learn? If you're a lefty, there's no damned way in Hell any conservatives are going to vote for you, so you may as well hold on to a scrap of credibility and dignity by not attempting to pander to those folks by pretending to be a centrist. The inverse, of course, holds true for conservative candidates. Selling out your core supporters in order to make yourself more palatable to your detractors, --who still aren't gonna vote for you-- isn't just unseemly; it's stupid.
Moreover, Obama betrays a profound lack of understanding in making such stupid comments and --I hate to say it-- but the blowhards on the right-wing radio talk shows now sound just a little bit truthful when they assert that Obama is a guy who just doesn't know much.
I was fully gettin' ready to gracefully bow out of the presidential race, for fear my independent candidacy might siphon away enough of the whacko-lefty vote that it could jeopardize Obama's presumed victory. I was gonna do that, for the good of our country.
But now? Screw that....
IT'S ON!

That might be worse. One cannot arrive at his stated position by actually knowing a damned thing about the matter.

There are a hell of a lot of swing voters, and there are a lot of people who traditionally vote one way that are willing to switch.
I'm probably going to vote for Obama. Not because of this though. And I'm about as right as they come.
There is this continued perception that righties vote according to party affiliation. That just isn't so - and it makes me wonder about those who make such claims - my guess is many of them vote according to party affiliation. Not a smart way to vote IMHO.

Mmm...pineapple! I think I'd like some form of ice cream with pineapple right now, especially on a hot day like this.

So Republicans who believe in fiscal responsibility will continue to elect Reagans and Bushes despite the skyrocketing deficits they run, Republicans who are Christian Conservative voted for Reagans and Bushes despite the total lack of action on abortion, etc. because righties don't, by and large, vote by party affiliation just as much (if not more than) as the lefties do?

You need to factor in the other guy too.
This year you're going to have alot of R's that really dislike McCain vote for him instead of Obama.
Lesser of two evils bit you've heard many times I'm sure.
Me, I'm tired of that game. If the Libertarians were running a real L this year I'd do what I did last election and vote for him. Earlier I halfway leaned toward and liked Obama but as time goes by I'm liking less and less.

Presumably, ending the Iraq war will staunch some of the bleeding. Also, UHC will arguably remove an enormous burden from U.S. companies and individuals thereby stimulating the economy. Kind of like tax cuts, except everyone benefits.
But, you say, UHC is just too expensive. I will take this opportunity to remind you that in the U.S., about $7500 is spent per person per year on health care while in those terrible socialist nations like Canada it's closer to $3500. And everyone there is covered.
Furthermore, let's look at some numbers released the other week. Due to the recession, all the automakers who sell in the U.S. saw severe drops in sales. GM and Toyota both did, and GM is still the #1 automaker in the U.S. and probably the world. But, they've been losing money quarter after quarter. I'll say it again: the company who sells more cars than anyone else in the world is losing money. Every time their numbers come out and another loss is announced some retard will say "Hurr! Nobody wants to buy their dumb cars!" but clearly that's not true. More people are still buying GM products than Toyota products. Maybe there's something else...
Ah yes. A company that posts a billion dollar loss is also a company that spends well over five billion dollars on employee and retiree health care.
Yes, I think that UHC will end up to be cheaper and better for the economy than the mess we have now. That's how he'll pay for it.

Other countries with UHC are running into shortfalls, costs are not being constrained.
Until that, UHC will fail to save any money or at least won't save for long.
I have zero faith that it will be run properly and that our pandering politicians (see the other thread on pandering and govt spending regardless of party) won't promise more than we can afford.

Yes. The goal is to have a bunch of power mongers fighting each other for territory, so that the people can live in relative peace. Only maniacs intend to run for office in this country.
I'll take this moment to announce my candidacy for President.
The problem I have with discussing freedom is that people have been conditioned to expect "of me to tell you what to do" to follow it... inevitably they notice I don't ever get to that part, and they feel like I am trying to trick them.

Wow. A corruption and vice-laden government can have the world's second best health care for less than 37th-ranked United States...

Getting rid of our current train wreck of a system is important to me. It's a drag on the economy and doesn't do a good job.

And the first part of fixing this problem is UHC.
Not getting rid of stupid laws like making it illegal to negotiate price for drugs or streamline paperwork mandated by the fed on the insurance companies or doing something about people with preexisting conditions.

Re: I was gonna drop out of the race so THIS SCHMUCK would have a chance?
I do not think that the "provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare" clause in the Constitution allows for social health care at a federal level. If it said "provide for the general welfare" I could accept it. Certainly it is not in the enumerated powers of the Federal Government. Social health care, to be legally implemented, must occur at the State level per my understanding.
The problem I have with discussing freedom is that people have been conditioned to expect "of me to tell you what to do" to follow it... inevitably they notice I don't ever get to that part, and they feel like I am trying to trick them.
