No, really, I wish they'd just use PCP like they do on animals.

Biggest problem with this, of course, is that if it's all being done outside (or in the absence of) rules and regulations, then anything goes.

As opposed to what?
Letting the crazy run around and slice people up?
Tazering the guy?
Bludgeoning the crazy into submission?
Shooting him?

True but that doesn't mean we should knowingly consider an especially crappy option either.

The beauty of that comeback is I don't have to. There are people working on that already. Devices that disable by overwhelming a persons senses have already been demonstrated. Capture nets have been used safely and effectively.

Re: Unruly at arrest? That's an injection.
I think that drugging a suspect, provided he retains memory and cognitive capacity, is on the same level as "overwhelming their senses."
I mean really, lets face what the problem really is: there is basically no nice way to exert force on another person no matter what reasons you have on your side to do so. The main thing I worry about this drug is that the person totally blacks out and cant remember anything- that opens a lot of space for abuse. But that doesnt happen just because drugs are bad.

I worry whenever a chemical is introduced to the body where you can't guarantee the proper effect.
I worry whenever a fragile piece if metal is inserted into someone whom is thrashing around. You have to restrain the guy in order to chemically restrain the guy and then continue to restrain until it works. Real good option.

And I worry that it will take someone's death to put a stop to this insane practice.

I don't worry about that. I sadly acknowledge that what it will take. People are too stupid for it to happen any differently.

What practice(s) did this replace and how many were killed using it/them?

They still can thrash about and harm themselves.
They take these people to the hospital, not jail.

Oh use the simple solution.
::: Takes out his Auto Mag 44 and puts two rounds into the suspect :::
There problem solved.

Under that logic, sedation should be the standard part of every arrest. Anybody could thrash around and hurt themselves or others.
The problem I have with discussing freedom is that people have been conditioned to expect "of me to tell you what to do" to follow it... inevitably they notice I don't ever get to that part, and they feel like I am trying to trick them.

You know there is a difference between your normal smurf and a crazy person.
That they used it 8 times in 2 years tell me they aren't using it without reason. smurfs are dozens per day.

If you WOULDN'T inject sedative to a crazy person off his meds, dancing around traffic with 2 sharp objects in his hands, then there is something wrong with you.
