A lot of these 2.0 apps suck

Either I didn't read the iphone only memo or something is the matter. But at least four of my apps say, "searching for your location" and then can't find it. I've deleted at least 4 of these paid for apps for this reason. Right now I'm using "File Management" and it won't open an Excel file! It seems to work for word.

And I thought you could open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files now anyway?

Re: A lot of these 2.0 apps suck

As a Touch owner and there being mostly games, I'm disappointed. So what if there is a HUGE offering of apps. It's like Windows - they mostly suck. I wanted more productivity apps that deal with iCal, among other things.

The SDK hasn't been out that long, the app store hasn't been out that long. You can't expect tons of fully developed and well thought out apps, for a platform that demands new interface paradigms.

Re: A lot of these 2.0 apps suck

Yeah, a lot of these apps suck, but the gems are absolutely awesome.

This kind of reminds me of what OS X 10.0 felt like when in launched. There were a few awesome apps that highlighted the platform's potential, a few buggy concepts that will certainly get improved, and a few apps that highlight improvements Apple needs to make in the OS / dev kit.

Overall, I'm happy as a damn clam. I just got an awesome gaming device, Remote = super bad ass, I finally have internet radio in my car, and with IM and Exchange support I can finally snub my nose at the office Blackberry users. This is a mighty good start.

Re: A lot of these 2.0 apps suck

I'm enjoying Super Monkey Ball, but it does have its flaws.  I've had to reinstall it on the iPhone already because it crashed and refused to launch again after that, which caused me to lose all progress.  And once you slip up once on any level, forget it -- the controls are too prone to what we in the aviation world call "pilot-induced oscillation" making it impossible to recover from a bad orientation.

I do enjoy the guy who wrote an app that does nothing but show a blank screen, for use as a flashlight, and had the nerve to charge a buck for it.  It has a one-star rating and many scathing reviews, yet it's still in the top 25 downloaded apps.  He's probably made a couple thousand this weekend with his six lines of code.

I've enjoyed replaying Cro-Mag Rally on my iPhone. The game does have a few minor glitches (you can slip through the boundary wall and get stuck on the "outside" of the game's universe) but since Pangaea games had the forethought to open all levels from the start, eliminating the need to progress by beating levels, it's never a big deal to quit and restart.

Re: A lot of these 2.0 apps suck

I'm just pissed that I deleted a few apps that I paid for. A loan app that does not allow you to put in the length of a loan for  a car loan (there is  a certain limit, like 20 years or something). Wtf is that? Delete, delete, delete. I've must have deleted like 5 apps, some free some not.

Test your product for christ sakes.

The first apps that should have been written should have involved better iCal alarms and useful stuff. And yes, I did pay for the flashlight app.blush

My first OS X app was Corel Draw.

Re: A lot of these 2.0 apps suck

It's at least as bad in the UK, since the first crop is heavily US-centric, but many don't work well either.

The 'Where' app is similarly poor - UK denizens are complaining that the application won't find any pizza restaurants within the middle of a city. Apparently this is important to those living in Blighty.

Local Picks by Tripadvisor finds restaurants and bars, but seemingly miles away from your current location.

This hack is currently sitting in reach of a dozen restaurants within a 100 metre radius, yet Local Picks insists the most local eatery is 10 miles away.

It's worse for Irish Iphone customers - they have no access to any games on the platform, at all. You can view screen shots of the missing games section on Macrumours.com.

Maybe wait a bit before splurging on untested apps?

I've not found an app that can even reliably recommend a good restaurant in Boston. shrug I wouldn't necessarily blame it on being on the other side of the pond.

Yeah, I didn't make that clear enough. Some are just not that good, wherever you be.

So - I guess there's no way to check out the apps before you purchase?  Too bad...

Twitteriffic from the Icon Factory http://iconfactory.com/home/permalink/2009 has both a free version and a commercial version.   I suspect there will be more of these pairs.

Re: A lot of these 2.0 apps suck

I have noticed some free apps have paid counterparts. Seems similar to shareware. If you like it, why not support the developer. Hopefully we will see more robust apps in the coming months.

I'm holding off on upgrading.  I wanted to do it right away, but I would miss Pocket Touch too much.  I think I am going to hold off until it is Jailbroken.

Re: A lot of these 2.0 apps suck

I do miss not being able to search apps by popularity or free etc. It's a really pain. You get a group of free ones, but that's it. I'm also fed up with constant receipts Apple sends me every time I download a new free app.

Still, some great apps coming out smile

Edit: I've overlooked a gem!

My Mac is my audio setup. Love iTunes and my Apple remote is great...
The iPod Touch is so much better! Check out remote, wonderfully implemented. A must for any iTunes junkie!
