When the 16GB iPhone sold out....how close were you?
I was 3 people away when the 16GB sold out. The AT&T store I went to only had 17 8GB, 11 Black 16GB, and 11 White 16GB iPhones.
The Black 16GB ones went the fastest. When they sold out of them the stock was down to 7 White and 7 8GB ones.
The people in front of me didn't want White....but they took what they could get. Me and the two guys in front passed on one of the 4 8GB ones that were left when it was our turn. Boy, were some of the people behind us happy as hell!
I got there around 7:15....the 4 guys in front of me got there around 7:05. I planned on getting there at 7.

I got the 2nd to last 16GB. It was white which is what I wanted so I couldn't be happier but still I got there at 8 so i'm pretty damn lucky I got one. Our store only had 30 iPhones but I live in kind of a smaller town.

iPhone supply appeared excellent in the US as of early this morning.
Check supply here for Apple stores in the US http://www.apple.com/retail/iphone/availability.html
Any predictions on sales ?

I was in bed, asleep.

Yeah, it seems the AT&T stores got a very limited supply. The Apple store down town was still selling them strong around 6pm last night....but I didn't want to wait in another line.
Silly me again....

I drove by the line at 7AM. Saw the length and went to work to Google one remaining question I had.
"Can the iPhone be tethered and used as a modem?"
Nope, unless you jailbreak it. WTF a very common feature in other smartphones. Sorry that's a deal breaker. I'm looking at the Mogul now.

I haven't seen the phones in real life. Does the black model look substantially cooler than the white one? In photos, the white one actually looks a lot like the brushed aluminum of the original iPhone's back side. If so, I'm not clear why the black one has proven to be the clear preference of fans.

Re: When the 16GB iPhone sold out....how close were you?
Got a White one today at the Apple store in Skokie. They were sold out of 16GB black ones...even though the iPhone tracker said they would have them today. An employee was apologizing all morning when people asked...lol.
The Black one kind of looks cooler to me...they reflect more than the white ones. But the White ones don't show finger smudges. That was enough of a rationalization for me to buy on the spot. lol But yeah, the black is more preferred. White is prolly selling 60% by choice and 40% by default.
The overall experience was better than I expected. I was greeted with a smile and a handshake from an Apple employee named Sheila. She was very posed and calm when going over the list of things to do. At no time did I feel she was rushing me through the process. It really helped that I was starting up a new AT&T contract from scratch and that I wasn't transferring over my old #. I was hearing that this is where a lot of the issues were coming from.
One thing that surprised me was that before the phone was activated, she handed me the box and said, "Here's your new iPhone, open it."
So I still got that Apple experience of opening a sealed product. At the AT&T store, they were doing all this for you behind the counter. I was out of the store within 15min. But, like I mentioned, I was probably one of the easier people to process.
For those of you still waiting to get one....I highly suggest going to an Apple Store over AT&T.

Re: When the 16GB iPhone sold out....how close were you?
I was at the mall yesterday, and the iPhone activation line was still a half a block long. I kind of want a 3G iPhone, but not that badly. The 2.0 software is damn awesome and more then enough to hold me off for now.
I'll go 3G once there are some compelling applications that really require the bandwidth. Pandra / Last FM would sound better in the car, and that's tempting, but I think it's going to be Nav software that eventually makes me upgrade.

Might be best for you just to hold out another year...wait for the contract to expire and then get whatever the 3G iPhone is.
