What's it take to change a goddam avatar around here?
I'm getting just a little a sick of Spider-Girl, so I thought I'd change my avatar. I've seen similar topics before so I knew that, since Spider-Girl's a .gif file, I needed to make the new one a .jpg file or it wouldn't work. I did that, and still was stuck with Spider-Girl. I eventually went so far as to delete the avatar completely in my profile. Then I uploaded the new one. I could see that Spider-Girl was not entirely deleted, because my profile page still showed her to me even after I had deleted her. Still, after that I posted some ... uh ... non-inflammatory comments in the MoFT and I was indeed treated to the sight of my new avatar. Thought the problem was all solved then, but oh[i], no! As soon as I'd done something else and went back to the MoFT [i]there was smurfing Spider-Girl again. I've been through this bullsmurf 6 or 8 times already. I realize that half the forum is seeing my new avatar and the other half is seeing the old one. I'm just wondering why on God's green earth such a simple thing needs to be so complicated, that's all.

Yeah, now I go back to my profile -> Personality page and there's the old avatar, looking just the same as always despite being deleted. Now that's just kind of dumb, don'tcha think, people? Perhaps the word "delete" has some different meaning for y'all than it does for the rest of us. To me, the word "delete" means to erase something .... to make it go away ... it sure as hell does not mean to make something reappear constantly. Let's continue on with the experiment here...

OK, now after the third supposed "deletion" of the old avatar it has finally stopped showing up in my profile -> Personality page. That's a somewhat encouraging sign. I wonder if the little bitch is still hanging around on your server, though...

Re: What's it take to change a goddam avatar around here?
Yup. Sure enough. Just went back to the profile page, clicked the Personality link, and the stupid old avatar is back again. That's really, really, damn annoying. How many times should I jump through the same damn hoop before I just throw my hands up in the air and give up? How retarded is any system that offers the user the option to delete a file and then refuses to delete it?

Oh, sure, now the new avatar is showing up. I wonder how long that will last...

Re: What's it take to change a goddam avatar around here?
And there ya go. As soon as I hit the Submit button for that last post the old avatar was back again. Seems like if the old avatar had actually been deleted from your server, as the link "Delete Avatar" implies, that would be impossible. Yet here I sit, having been through this rigamarole at least 5 times now, right back to square one.
Just thought I'd point out a bug for y'all. You can really fix it or not and it's no skin off my nose one way or another. :b

You should be able to replace a gif with a gif.
The problem happens when replacing an image with an image having an alphabetically-later extension.

Re: What's it take to change a goddam avatar around here?
Since you have used .gif, all your avatars must be .gifs from now on. The board software has a rather large bug on this issue.
SO, is it ever going to be fixed?

trying to upload a 6k avatar on this forum is a friggin' JOKE. That size requirement is ridiculous.

But the limit is what it is, and it can be done. If you need help, just ask.

I really don't know, but I don't think so. Avatars should be jpg, gif, or png.
You don't see it much anymore but back 'round the turn of the century I was seeing a fair number of jpegs that had .dat as an extension.
I have no idea why that was so but GraphicConverter recognizes .dat as a valid image extension .

I just tried it and the finder had no problem with it (10.5.6, I DID get a warning) I changed a .jpg to .dat. Quick-look could show it, and a double-click opened it in the right application.
But, I'm a coward and I'll let somebody else try to upload a .dat avatar. Please report your results.
(Or maybe a PunBB guru could tell us if it would work)

The problem with meeting the file size limit for an avatar is usually forgetting to strip the resource.

photoshop -> save for web. Works for me usually anyway.

Yeah.
In Imageready-> save optimized.
In GraphicCoverter look for "save without resource" or "web ready"
