Kernel Panic when running OS X Install Disk

When I insert my Mac Pro's OS X install disk which came with my computer or my Leopard upgrade disk and restart off the disk I get a grey screen of death/kernel panic.

What can I do to fix this problem? I wanted to do a clean install of Leopard but was unable to because I get a kernel panic every time I attempt to.

Here is the crash log:

Re: Kernel Panic when running OS X Install Disk

Have you added RAM or other non-Apple-supplied upgrades since you bought the computer?

Re: Kernel Panic when running OS X Install Disk

Previous to installing off the Leopard disk (which worked fine) I added 2 GBs of RAM from OWC, ATI X1900 XT form Apple,  and a second Hard Drive from OWC.

After installing leopard I've haven't added any RAM but I did add a Nvidia 8800GT from Apple and a Western Digital Raptor from Newegg (Which I use for bootcamp).

Its logical to start removing something.  Whatever seems easiest.

I guess I could remove hardware in the order I installed it and keep testing the install disks? Is there an easier solution or is that my best bet?

That's pretty much your best bet. Not just for the install, but if the culprit is under warranty, you'll want a replacement.

OK, thanks. I'll give it a try and report back.

Re: Kernel Panic when running OS X Install Disk

Ok, I pulled some hardware out today. The culprit appears to be the 8800GT.

I took out the 8800GT and put in a 7300GT and the leopard install began like a charm.
I then took the 7300GT out and put the 8800GT back in a tried the leopard install. Which resulted in a kernel panic.

What should I do next? Call Apple?

Re: Kernel Panic when running OS X Install Disk

I had the same problem today. I also purchased the NVidia 8800GT for my Mac Pro and installed a RAID array today.

I wanted to install Leopard on the RAID, but I got the kernel panics as well. I tried two different copies of Leopard as well as the 10.4 discs that came with my computer, all of them got kernel panics.

I started taking out all the stuff that didn't come with the computer originally, and it was the 8800GT that did the trick. Good thing I kept my ATI X1900.

I just installed leopard with the ATI card in the machine, and once I was done I put the NVidia back in and it works like a charm.

It is indeed a hassle every time we want to install an operating system. Perhaps the discs that we have do not have the proper drivers for the new NVidia 8800GT? In any case, I will be e-mailing/calling tech support to let them know about the problem I was experiencing.

It is good to know I'm not the only one. I'm going to call Apple next week. I'll be going on vacation tomorrow so I won't have time for a while. But, please tell me what  you here from Apple godspeed.

Re: Kernel Panic when running OS X Install Disk

Ok, I called Apple support and they sent me a new 8800GT and it arrived in under 24 hours which was amazing. But, when I put the new card in I got the same problem.

So, I called again and they told me to go to the Apple store.

I did that on Sunday and the genius told me without even having to take my computer out of the box that my install disk and the current version of the leopard disk don't contain the required video drivers. Which is one thing I suspected.

Anyway, he said at the moment there is nothing they can do until a new version of leopard is sold as a hard copy. Otherwise I need to take the card out, boot off the install disk, install what I need, and then put the 8800GT back in.
