Verizon and bypassing their stupid "Search Results" page problem...
So Verizon has this thing installed in their servers that hijacks my browser if I type a word into the address bar without adding .com or .net or .whatever. It used to be I could type a word and my browser would add this for me. It was SO convenient. But now Verizon hijacks it before the browser has a chance to add it and takes me to their crappy search engine.
They offer instructions on how to "opt out" of this "service" but they do not work at all.
They give a couple options. Either I choose a router from the list (Mine's not on the list.) or I follow the instructions on how to change them in the OS.
But the OS instructions for OS X don't even work either because I hit a wall.
The instructions tell me to open System Preferences, go into Network and get to the DNS settings. Even though the instructions are for 10.2-10.4, and 10.5 switched things around, it's not that hard to find where DNS went.
Then it says to change the already existing IP's so instead of x.x.x.12, they say x.x.x.14. Seems easy enough. Right?
But I can't change them.
OS X has them greyed out so I can't select or edit them.
What gives? Can I edit them? I hate that damn page. Even Comcast never did that.

The greyed out ones are those that the Router/Modem sets via DHCP, you can add others to the mix if you want too.

Re: Verizon and bypassing their stupid "Search Results" page problem...
I think I might have fixed it. It took a little while to trickle down though. Last night I just randomly went into the config page and found the area where it said DNS1, DNS2, DNS3 and changed the first two from 0.0.0.0 to x.x.x.14 and it is now reflected in the Network panel of OS X. Good riddance to Verizon. Now it goes to the site if it exists under .com and a Google page if it doesn't. Just what I've wanted since we switched from Comcast.
Thread over.
