Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum

I wasn't part of these forums in the early years, but I read MacAddict from the beginning.  I think part of the reason there is maybe less of a sense of community here than there used to be is that there is less of a sense of community in the Apple user base in general.

Seems like there were far less casual Mac users back in the System 7/8 pre iMac days.  Now Apple is awfully trendy, people have less history with the company and are less passionate about it.

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum

Yes it sure was.

MiniThink is it's own special zone of "suck" and I think most of the people here know that.

I was out of line, and that thread should have been closed far earlier.

If you really want to dig there is another instance which got me temp banned.

Yay drunk posts.

MacAddict was an awesome magazine. The MacAddict Forums were awesome. Techy, geeky, tongue in cheek and fun.

These new forums are cold, barren and corporate.

I do hope some former sense of MA comes back.

All hail Prison Guy!

EDIT: Re-read the thread in question. I must have been waaay drunk. Even I admit that was pure and senseless drivel. I am quite shocked actually.

Still, I want articles on holiday lights and chopping up LC's and making them into RC cars. I want articles on how to boss proof my Mac and so on. I want the fun back dammit. I don't need another article on how to plot a density graph in Excel. (these are examples).

We all know what I am talking about and we all know it won't ever come back. The current attitude towards maintaining / upgrading / adding features to the forums only mirrors IMO what is going on with the magazine. This is why I did not bother to renew it. I still pick up an issue from time to time, hoping that some glimpse of geekery has re-established itself, but every times I might as well have paid for 56 pages of FAIL.

/sigh

Sorry to dredge it up, but your prior bad behavior was the first thing I thought of when I read your post criticizing the moderation here.

It's certainly a difficult balance to strike, and we're obviously not perfect and don't always get it right.  We're volunteers, after all.

Compared to the number of members who have posted here over the years, the number who have been permanently banned from posting on the board is quite small.

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum

I have no problem with you bringing it up.

It would be hypocritical of me to claim over moderation then bitch about it when I am used as an example.

What you brought up was an example of moderation applied properly.

Nothing?

I would say it is a combination of the poor interface of these forums, combined with the sour attitude of the few who are left.

In fact, the forum software changed so long ago that I don't think we can really say that is the reason for the drop in posts or good conversations. Also, the same people that bash this setup tend to think the previous one (which I liked from a user perspective) was trash and that is when the forums were in their heyday.

The steady decline of these forums has much more to do with the way people treat one another than it does with any software. Back in the day we always had a few trolls that the majority of the people knew were trolls and they were fed and/or starved at the appropriate times. However, we have too many regular, long-time forum members now that are bitter and treat others with disdain. When the conversation drops to that level it makes people with busy lives question the worth of wasting some of their precious free time in here.

In fact, I'm sure that you might even see this post get blasted by a few of them.

LOL.

That's such a ridiculous post! If geekette feels a sense of community enough to comment on it, who are you to tell her she's wrong?

I mean, if I said I had a stomachache, would you tell me I didn't?

Honestly, this is the funniest thing I've seen all day. (Why are you still here again?)

On the other hand, if Justine said she didn't have a stomach ache, would you tell her she did?

,xtG
.tsooJ

Your analogy misses the point completely. It isn't the equivalent of saying that she does have a stomach ache. We are talking about how someone perceives something and the fact is that two people can perceive a sense of community in the opposite way. It is completely possible for one person to feel a sense of community while the other does not. It is impossible for either of them to say that the other person is wrong.

If you are anti-social and don't involve yourself in a positive way with what is going on in your neighborhood then you won't feel a sense of community but that in no way means that your neighbor doesn't feel one. We have a neighborhood organization and when we have meetings there are people that live 10 houses down from us that perceive the neighborhood in a completely different way than my wife and I do. That does not mean that one of us is right and the other is wrong, just that we have had different experiences with our neighbors and other aspects of our environment.

Apple detractors have not killed this forum.

The fact that the people who own it have shown us they don't care about it is the problem.

If they don't care, why should anyone else?

I disagree completely. In fact, looks like the tabs now have names so someone has been making changes to the forum software.

Please let us know what you think is so horrible about the forums that it keeps people from coming here.

On the plus side, they removed that annoying "Mark all as read" link from the individual forums.

I hated that thing.

Yeah but that's a single topic not a whole forum. Though the point is valid despite the exaggeration. Traffic is slow.

It just so happened to be the only topic people had posted in for nearly the last day in that forum. And now we have spent just as many posts talking about it.
