Anyone going to Comic Con?

Comic Con's  week off, and if anyone is going who might like to meet up for coffee, beer, or at one of the industry parties, mention here smile

I would go, but San Diego is just soooooooooo far away.

Re: Anyone going to Comic Con?

I live in San Diego but I'm a poor student so I can't justify the cost of admission. I went a couple years ago and it was fun but this year there aren't any "must see" things. When I last went I basically went for a Don Hertzfeldt panel.

If you hear of any good parties, though, feel free to let me know...

I wish! Quite a few panels will have people I want to see - but I hadn't known in advance they would be there.

Re: Anyone going to Comic Con?

Well, fromt he last two posts, and having been there four times out of the past five years, plus the new 'online only' admission, *breathe*, PLUS the new admission limits (passes sell out as of last year, when they didn't bother to warn anyone before selling out) I am a bit on the fence.

There are a LOT of great professional panels this year, for both comic professionals (in terms of both industry knowledge and intellectual property law), and indie film folk.

On the other hand, the year before last was really the best Comic Con I've attended. Every year has it's high points, though, and last year I met and networked with lot of professionals and Comic Con committee people. More than that though, they were just cool people to hang out with. The programming for last year was not nearly as good as the previous, add to that the fact that they suddenly and without warning sold out of passes, which had never happened before.

As for the animation festivals, they were repeats of the previous year. I don't think Spike and Mike or Judge and Hertzfeldt presented anything new at their festivals/panels. It was a big let-down.

I'm hoping the new registration rules produce something positive. I have to admit, the crowds can get annoying at times, moreso in the exhibit hall than anywhere else. Maybe this'll be better this year. I doubt I'll do any protfolio reviews, but maybe those resources which have previously gone into daily walk-in registrations will go to improve that area of the Con -it really needs improvement, and has needed it for some time.

I don't think I've ever had a 'bad' Con experience. In fact, I've each time experienced something new which has made it somewhat memorable, which is part of why it's become a yearly tradition for my firends and I.

It's certainly in your field, so it's good that you are going.

Maybe you can get some scanning pointers.....

Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

The latest Animation Show was a real let-down for me.

Well, I've done really well with protfolio reviews so far, however I fail with the follow-up.
I make a great first impression, then drop off the face of the earth for one reason or another, though
the major reason has been putting my post-military life together, which I've done and so now have begun
this year-long graphic novel project. I have my primary career going strong now to finance it.

Oh, and I bought the camera (the Lumix FZ8) and macro lenses, and plan on building a copy stand wink
I've read up on the process and am going to test it all out. If it works, I may write up a guide or some such for it.

That's what I was talking about- The Animation Show and Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted were completely lackluster. Nearly all of it was repeated from the year previous. Maybe they didn't receive enough new submissions?

Re: Anyone going to Comic Con?

I've never been to a Comic Con, so I'm sure if I went it would all be good.

The ones I really want to see are the famous people... (i.e., the Terminator TV show actors/actresses). But I don't know if those are generally difficult to get into to see..

Nah, there would be lots of people, for sure (and who doesn't have the hots for Summer Glau?), but you'd be able to get in easily, I think.

It's usually stuff like the Adult Swim panel that fills, and they were a no-show last year. in 2006, the room filled before I could get in. I think I had just finished attending another panel, and there had already been a line out the door and around three hallways, a line which started more than an hour beforehand. Crazy.

IIRC, that was the same year the Farscape miniseries panel was held (or maybe it was 2005?). I was late to that one, too, but found seating with no problems -I imagine the Terminator series would be similar in attendance.

Most of the costumes at Comic Con don't come with real maces wink
