RIP for HP DesignJet 5000 Plotter

Hi. One of our sister companies gave us their old HP 5000 plotter but it didn't come with a RIP.

Does anyone know of an inexpensive RIP for it? I have done a bunch of searching but am only coming up with multi-thousand dollar options.

Thanks

We use PosterShop on our really big printers. And we have Sunburst for the two Epson 9800's. The Sunburst software is expensive, buggy and slow. I quit using it about a year ago and I print directly from Photoshop now. No one can tell the difference, it's more reliable and faster.

RIP packages are expensive because not many are sold, compared to Office or Photoshop. You probably won't find one for cheap.

How does printing from PhotoShop work? Your plotter must have a built-in RIP then? What kind of printer driver do you use? Thanks.

You don't need a RIP. HP has native printer drivers for OS X. They're included in the default OS X install. A RIP is only needed for colour workflow.

The cheapest RIP I've seen is about $500, but I can't think of it's name.

Are you connecting to it USB or network? It might even be bonjour aware.

Epson has drivers on their site as well as profiles for many different substrates. I'm sure that HP has what you need to print.

Is the printer connected to a network? Is your workstation?

Is it an HP5000 PS? That's the model with the built in hardware RIP and Hard Drive. If that's what you have then you won't need a software RIP. Having said that, I definitely recommend using a RIP station.

We used to print right from Illustrator and Photoshop to ours until we got our software RIP. We use the Wasatch Poster Shop RIP software and it is a huge step up from printing directly. I know Wasatch is expensive, but maybe you can track down an older copy online.

No USB on those things, you can only print using the HP Jet Direct Ethernet card, or the Firewire card I believe.

Yeah, the jetdirect card makes it pretty easy.

Unfortunately, it's just a 5000, not a 5000 PS. :-(

Leopard's drivers don't seem to work on it.

The guy who sent us the plotter says he MIGHT have the disk for the RIP that they had with it originally. I just have to find a Windows box for it now. bleck

Yeah, it's like they sent you the printer but failed to include the power supply.

Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

No kidding! I will just wait until tomorrow and cross my fingers that he has the right disks.
