KOTOR MMO confirmed

One of the worst-kept secrets in gaming finally leapt out of the bag today. EA has officially confirmed that BioWare and LucasArts are working on a Knights of the Old Republic MMO.

This was sort of an offhand announcement, so no other details about the game were revealed, such as title or projected release date. Still, this is Star Wars, so it's good news no matter how sparse the specifics. I just hope BioWare rips apart the KOTOR/Mass Effect engine, as it's awfully bland in comparison to a truly modern RPG.

More here.

...and if it ever gets an OSX client, it will be the Worst Port EVAR!! big_smile

Alert Brad O. He'll need Metacell on this one, to [s]take the blame[/s] ably assist. wink

What, is that the [s]smart ass[/s] subliminal tag? lol

Hmm, while I normally have no enthusiasm for MMOs, KOTOR could actually be interesting.  It would benefit from some of the starship fighting rules.

Kinda. [s][/s], strikethru, doesn't work in this software, so it's a multipurpose style touch. Wish it did work, though smile

Yeah, I think this one has potential. Space is a good setting for MMOs, and Bioware showed with the parent game they can make a world/universe with enough depth to be worth exploring.

Re: KOTOR MMO confirmed

I'm happy and saddened by this. I know KOTOR MMO will be awesome, but I also wanted it to remain single player for one more game at least. The game experience is going to be cheapened even more when talking to Bastila for an epic quest while some jerk spams trade channel with a new Chuck Norris story.

Guess since I want to find out what happened in the other games, I will be getting this. I may even switch from WoW to KOTOR so I can at least fill in the holes from the other plots.

Re: KOTOR MMO confirmed

In order for it to work, I think it would need a dynamic storyline that had to be invented based on player actions in the universe...either really clever plotline AI, or real GameMaster involvement.  Some things need to be dashed right away (such as the necessity of teamwork)...I think the degree that KOTOR focuses on personal choices as much as tactics has some real entertainment potential, but I'm not sure how this could be pulled off.

The thing that turns me off of MMOs, is I want to be able to play the game by myself to see if I like it before committing to another subscription service.  What would be very cool would be to have a single player storyline that requires you at certain points to go out into "the big wide universe" and accomplish something, gain experience, whatever, then based on your behavior there, progresses in different possible directions.  For instance, you could be required to recover some artifact that some other player characters might be in possession of, either by bargaining or defeating them.

Anyways, I've not MMO'd much more than a few hours, and watching my addicted brain-rotted friend succumb to nofriendism, so maybe my ideas are stale by now.

Anyway, online PAAZAK would be cool.

Re: KOTOR MMO confirmed

I would rather it be offline, I have no use for MMO's.

Re: KOTOR MMO confirmed

Ya now if it had single player offline and MMO built in to expand the universe, i'd dig that.

All Paazak is, is Blackjack Star Wars style tongue.
