The OP article has a point. I don't eat Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts muffins but I really never would have guessed that they were over 350 calories. I mean, it's one thing to know that if your lunch varies from going down to the Burger King and going down to the KFC, you're not healthy but who expects a muffin to be practically a meal's worth of fat?
If you're surprised to hear how many calories are in muffins, you might be surprised to hear that one ounce of peanuts contains 170 calories and 14 grams of fat (and that link points to Planters' web site). So if someone were to eat just a handful of peanuts(~2 ounces), they would have just eaten 340 calories and a little less than half of their daily recommended fat. Just a handful of pecans contains 400 calories and 64% of the daily recommended fat.
Or one bag of microwave popcorn? It contains 210 calories, but 14 grams of fat, again, just under half of the daily recommended fat.
I am not convinced that obesity is entirely due to overeating. It seems likely that ignorance of the fat and calorie contents of food is a major cause.

There are calories and then there are calories.

Oh - and I think both the automobile and television had greatly reduced the number of calories the average American burns in a day.

Perhaps walkability has diminished substantially over the past few decades.

They should change the laws and make it easier to open a pub. A small non-assuming little place in the middle of a giant neighborhood. One that people can WALK to and from.
Like Scotland.

In "Armed and Dangerous", when you need to restore your health, you go into a pub.

You can still live that way. I do. It's a 20 minute walk, not two blocks, to the grocery store.
The problem is people have gotten lazy. Why walk 20 minutes when you can hop in your car or call for delivery?
This btw is why I don't buy all the bull smurf about how bad this country is doing economically.

Uh, in the town my parents live in, you can walk to the nearest grocery store from where they live, however, you take your life into your own hands in doing so. The other, better grocery stores are further, roughly a 20 minute drive. This is in the suburbs of central NJ too, not anywhere rural.

Not to mention that a 20 minute walk is a bit hard to do with frozen goods in the summer heat.

Not really - you just do it in the early morning or late evening. Cloth grocery bags fit nicely over the shoulder.
Granted, can't buy large quantity, but it's very doable.

. . . about time somebody did this. It certainly won't solve the entire problem but half a loaf is better than none. people also need to 1. exercise 2. learn to cook.
I'm for minimally processed food, all the addatives, trans fats, and other stuff is bound to affect the way the body processes protein, carb, and fat. It's becoming more and more difficult to avoid that stuff though unless you buy all fresh veggies, meats, and grains/cereals.

When I'm in shape, I look for calorie content to make sure I'm getting enough. Yay for 40 miles at 22 mph, in the foothills! Man I love riding my bike.

I'm sure there are plenty of legitimate reasons to drive to do your shopping, but it is having an impact on our natural exercise, so when we drive all around town, it is important that you set aside some of the time saved for exercise. Most people don't.

Walking back though, lugging a bunch of bags must suck. Though if you do that you could probably skip working out at the gym.

I read that L.A. intends to ban more fast food joints in certain impoverished areas because of an obesity epidemic. The city council intends to attract businesses that offer healthier food to those places.
I just don't think I could see myself living in a house without mirrors.

If they outlaw twinkies, only outlaws will have twinkies !
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.
