MDD G4 refuses sleep and shutdown...
Hi,
I have a MDD G4 dual 1ghz with 1.5GB RAm.
I cannot shut it down or sleep it. When I click shut down, it restart. If I click sleep it shuts everything off but then immediately turns back on. I can hold the power button down and force it off, but that's no good.
Permissions seem ok.
OS 10.4.11
Any ideas?
thanks

Do you experience the same issues when you have your internet connection unplugged?
Side question: Have you upgraded the processor?

Inspect the power button on the front of the machine. It might be stuck in under the case.
Try resetting the PRAM.

Re: MDD G4 refuses sleep and shutdown...
This is not an upgraded CPU.
Network... I don't know. Will try it out tonight.
The Power button is fine.
Resetting the PRAM does not fix it.
thanks,

Re: MDD G4 refuses sleep and shutdown...
The big question is when did this start? Have you owned this machine for long, and if so, what has changed since then.
Hope it all works out.

Re: MDD G4 refuses sleep and shutdown...
Is "Restart after a power failure" checked in the Energy Management control panel? I'm just fishing for something similar I heard of a few months ago about a Mac being accidently set for automatic restart....sounds like your situation...you may find it with a forum search.

Re: MDD G4 refuses sleep and shutdown...
Thanks for all the replies. This is actually my mother's machine, and I didn't get to it last night.
I owned this machine for probably a good 2 1/2 years before I gave it to her.
I will make a trip to her house tonight and get the answers you seek
.
Thanks again for everything. Hopefully I'll be back on here tonight.

Well, So far all your suggestions have not had an effect. I appreciate the help though.
Are there other suggestions?
thanks again,

Re: MDD G4 refuses sleep and shutdown...
I reseated all cards and ram installed in the machine, just in case. I also reset the PMU in case that was causing the sleep/shutdown issues but nothing has changed.
thanks again

Is the electricity stable at that house outlet ? Do you have another computer to test at that outlet ?

Yeah the electricity is clean. There are two computer plugged into a UPS. One Mac and one compaq. The PC, although quite a bit newer, does not exhibit any strange behaviour besides insisting on displaying XP professional on its screen
.
I have also tried the mac on another circuit as well.

Re: MDD G4 refuses sleep and shutdown...
I'm having the same problem with my MDD G4. I've tried just about everything to get it to shutdown or sleep. Tried a proper monitor as Apple suggests, unplugged all the USB devices, reset PRAM, everything...
I'm wondering if it might be because Panther 10.5 was loaded on the machine before I got it a month ago. I reformatted the drive, installed Tiger 10.4 and it works fine except for the shutdown/sleep issue.
Jsheffie, have you resolved the issue on your machine? Are you running 10.4?

inspect the logs (console.app). Does anything strange appear before you attempt to shutdown?

Re: MDD G4 refuses sleep and shutdown...
Try to run the hardware test CD. The "repeated transitions" error looks somewhat familiar--though my problem was with the firewire port.
