Windows Home Server bug- fixed at last

Not quite there... maybe June, maybe not.

Microsoft is urging Windows Home Server (WHS) users not to get too optimistic that a bug-free fix for the operating system's chronic corruption problems will be finished by June, due to the time needed for testing.  It is understandable why it has to issue such a statement; WHS users obviously are likely to be a bit impatient after the long saga of problems that have plagued the OS.

Initially released last November with high hopes and billed by Microsoft to be the future of home user storage, it was soon discovered that the OS corrupted some types of files.  As the month passed, the number of file types found to be corruption susceptible and the situations under which corruption arose merely grew.  Microsoft promised a fix soon after Christmas.  By March there was still no fix and word came from Microsoft that the WHS's underlying file system was broken and that a full fix would not be available to June.

Microsoft did discover that the problem seemed to revolve around the use of multiple hard drives.  Users with two or more hard drives were the main victims of corruption.  There have been scattered unsubstantiated reports of single hard drive corruption.  In its blog Microsoft wrote, "It is at an extremely low level of the operating system and it requires thorough testing to ensure that the fix addresses the issue."

Almost there.

Now the Windows Home Server team has announced the availability of Release Candidate (RC) beta for the fix.  Typically, a release candidate precedes a finalized Release to Manufacturers (RTM) of an OS patch.  The new RC comes with release documentation.  Additional list of known issues are available on the Windows Home Server forums.

Re: Windows Home Server bug- fixed at last

The fix for Windows Home Server's broken file system finally is released to market

Microsoft's Windows Home Server (WHS) is almost fully back in operation after about nine months of difficulty.  The operating system marked the most troubled release of the last couple generations of Windows-branded systems.  Now at last it can move over and perhaps fulfill the bright potential that seemed to await it when it was released

Marketed as a home storage solution, and backed with hardware partners, Windows Home Server looked to be a very promising product, putting server style data backup in simplified form in the hands of the consumer.  However, soon after its release it was found that it corrupted files stored on it.  For a server, which is utilized primarily to safeguard data, data corruption is considered a "cardinal sin".
...

On Monday the WHS team released the final fix, Windows Home Server Power Pack 1, in RTM form.  The English version is available through the Downloads Center, and Microsoft promises that German, Spanish, and French versions will soon be available.

The update will be pushed into Windows Update in August.  Also in August, Japanese and Chinese versions will be rolled out.

...

Finally, as July comes to a close, Microsoft has released the shipping version of Power Pack 1. Now if you haven’t quite picked up on the tone of this blog post yet, I am not particularly happy with the situation. I’m quite happy that the issue has been fixed, I am also happy that Microsoft has deployed the rest of the Power Pack 1 features, but I am not happy with how long it has taken.

Exclusive: Microsoft's Windows Server Team Answers Our Questions
DailyTech sits down and gets the scoop on the latest offerings from server industry leader Microsoft

DailyTech chronicled Microsoft's Windows Server Solutions group's work on upcoming products poised to strike in the home, small and mid-sized business markets.  Microsoft in essence is growing new server business where no cohesive efforts -- only proprietary solutions, or in many cases no solutions at all -- previously existed.  Where the article detailed the efforts in a digested news form, the following is the unabridged original interview with Joel Sider, Senior Product Manager of the Windows Server Solutions group.
