Nintendo working on Wii follow-up?

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has dropped a heavy hint that the company already has plans in place for the post-Wii era.

Speaking in an interview with the Wall Street Journal Iwata admitted that the hardware team had already begun work, although he wouldn't be drawn on details.

"The hardware team started work on the next thing as soon as they were done with their previous project, but what they think up doesn't necessarily become a product," he said.

"We only turn something into a product after it's been thoroughly vetted inside the company. We're not at a point where we can give specifics, but of course we're working on it."

Let the wild speculation begin! smile

Here's hoping for stronger graphics and HD support.

Definitely a more powerful CPU and GPU would help, along with much more RAM, as well as shader support. (fixed function graphics pipelines are sooo 1990s)

I don't care what they do, as long as they keep the price point the same. I don't think Nintendo will be able to cater to the kids and compete with the "big boys".

Re: Nintendo working on Wii follow-up?

I expect they'll target the same demographic and keep the formula they have, as well as the price point. They're minting money.

Chip and overall tech advances should bring HD and, likely, shader support & a faster CPU as chip prices come down and they commoditize. But I doubt Nintendo will try to compete on the A/V front, just improve.

(As I think about it, the heyday of the FF pipeline was 2001-2. DX7 and OGL of the period made FF T&L available; games like Red Faction and Max Payne came in Fall '01. But DX8.0- 8.1 already debuted in '01 with the GeForce 3 [1/01], and by Nov. demos and games like Halo ['Box] and Aquanox [PC] ushered in programmable shaders. The FF pipe had a short heyday, but [just] after the '90s).

Re: Nintendo working on Wii follow-up?

Aside from better graphics and HD support, I imagine it will have better 'net play.  I'm not sure if it will be able to download full length games, because once you add that feature you have to drop in a large amount of storage and you open it up to easier copyright infringement...

Re: Nintendo working on Wii follow-up?

Good catch, Net play. But will that really have to wait on a new machine? Seems that's as much a service/ infrastructure issue as hardware... also software. Games will need to need to be more oriented to Net play. MP obviously foreign to Nintendo, but seems to me is more social/party-oriented. XBL-type play has to have games friendly to solitary co-op vs. & modes. Voice comm is great stuff, almost needful these days.

Not familiar enough with the Wii to know if more capable networking hardware is needed.
