Aperture or anything else?
Mac users, what software do you use to organize & fine tuning/editing your pictures in your computer? Do you use Aperture or something else? If so, what's the name of the software you use? iPhoto seems to be a light weight when you want to get a little more serious with your photography. I don't mean that I want to become a photographer, but I do want to take/have more professionally-looking shots. I like Apple's products and that's why I thought about Aperture, but I know it is the baby on the market. There have been others around for years and--for what I understand--quite good too. I appreciate all your comments. Thanks.
(I have a Canon Rebel XTi, in case that matters.)

It works. My brother is a photographer and uses it.

I've heard of it. That's the one I was referring to when I mentioned that Aperture was the new baby on the market. I'm sure it's better than iPhoto, but, how does it stack up against Aperture?

Re: Aperture or anything else?
actually lightroom came onto the scene after aperture. lightroom being 15 months the younger.
I haven't used aperture so I can't say which is better. what I can say is that in my limited experience with lightroom it is fantastic.

If your computer is up to it, Aperture rocks. Freakin' Awesome.

Re: Aperture or anything else?
Apeture makes heavy demands upon memory and graphics functions. Lots of RAM is needed and a good video card, note that this doesn't mean one that is built to support gaming graphics.

Let's just say that if you are still using that machine quoted in your signature, both you and it will be driven to tears by Aperture.

I see what you mean and I'm kind of feeling that now my computer is, well, antiquated. Yes, I still have that computer, but I also have a MacBook Pro. I would like to buy a Mac Pro but I don't have the money. Hell, I don't even have the money for an iMac. I'm thinking about using my MBP as my computer and just buy external HDs to store all my information. In my current set-up I already have a couple of externals where I store my music (mp3s) and another one for concerts. I'm thinking of getting one for photos.
Going by what you say, I would be using Aperture with my MBP, not my G4.

A MacBook Pro should do nicely. Perhaps not spectacularly, depending on age (configuration), but it'll do.

Re: Aperture or anything else?
An iMac would also handle Apeture adequtely.

Re: Aperture or anything else?
I have had Aperture for a couple of months and really like it. I also have Photoshop, and the only complaint is that they (being Apple) could have made it a lot easier to integrate with Photoshop; but I am still quite happy. Camera is a Canon 40D.

Thanks Mark. Let me ask you this, could you work with Aperture alone? I mean, without using any other photography software (like Photoshop or Lightroom, etc)? Thanks.

I hardly go into Photoshop anymore since Aperture is pretty much non-destructive. Although there is no way to stitch panoramic photos in Aperture, so Photoshop works quite nice for that. Photoshop probably has more printing features as well; but Aperture is pretty nice, but as others have said... it likes RAM, a fast GPU and a fast CPU as well.

Re: Aperture or anything else?
I use Aperture on a CoreDuo Macbook Pro with 2 gigs of RAM and I find it works fairly well.
Aperture works great for most basic image tuning, as well as some tweaking (cloning out dust spots). Version 2 supports plugins as well, so more functionality will be available that way as well.
For serious work I still use photoshop, but for the vast majority of what i do I find Aperture works really well. Now I just need to find 300 bucks for the Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 Aperture plugin.
From what I can tell, either way, you're screwed. Bad people are punished by society's laws, and good people are punished by Murphy's Law.

Re: Aperture or anything else?
I use Adobe Bridge (bundled with Photoshop CS3) for downloading, organizing and viewing files and Photoshop CS3 for editing. I use a MacBook Pro 2.16 Ghz Core Duo. It's about 2.5 years old, and my most frequently used cameras take 12 Mpx images, so some filters, especially noise reduction and blur filters and plug-ins take a few seconds to do their work. But I am pretty happy. CS3 has a serious learning curve, but has limitless possibilities. I've never tried Aperture or Lightroom.

Re: Aperture or anything else?
Really? No Lightroom users? I tried them both and preferred Lightroom by far. Just interface differences, really. At the time I felt Lightroom was the better performer, tho I found them both dog slow on my old 1.67 G4 PBook, Lightroom was just slightly less slow. Now I'm on a 2.16 C2D MBP and things are better-ish. I'd be willing to try Aperture again, but with nearly 30K photos that could be a chore. Don't expect either to run well hardware more than a couple years old.

Re: Aperture or anything else?
Aperture sold me when they announced the plug-in capability. Otherwise I would have done Lightroom.

Lightroom has "plug-ins" and filters.
I use it everyday.
