Video TS to FCP

Alrighty, so it seems I either stink at using the search feature, or there's not much discussion on the topic, so here goes...

Some friends of mine shot some footage using a Sony camera that uses those little mini DVDs.  They want me to edit it for them.

I'm on a MBP, so I knew better than to stick those little discs in my slot-loading drive.  The Sony capture software is not Mac-compatible, so I can't plug the camera into the computer for capturing directly.

A friend of mine transferred the Mini discs to regular-sized DVDs for me, since he had a tray-loading drive.

So, now I have the content on my HDD as Video TS folders, which play fine in the DVD player app, so that's all well and good.

Now I need recommendations for how to bring that footage into FCP.  Any particular recommendations for conversion software, or particular file types/formats?  There's a chance some of this footage might get mixed with some HDV footage (I know, I know, mixing SD/HD, as well as aspect ratios.  Pain in the butt.), so if there's anything I need to keep in mind for that, I'd appreciate tips as well.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You'll need the MPEG-2 Components for Quicktime, which is $20 from apple, but it might come included with FCP. Either way, once you have it, the above software will convert .VOB files (inside the video TS folder) to DV or MOV or whatever you want.

Thanks 333!  Testing it out now.  Will post back with results...

Re: Video TS to FCP

You should be able to demux and convert .vob streams with ffmpegX, as long as it isn't copy protected.   Final Cut Studio does indeed include the MPEG2 codecs, so if you have them don't pay for them again.

Re: Video TS to FCP

The program that 333 recommended worked out.  Conversion took a little while, but that's ok.

Files weren't copy-protected, since they were from a DVD camcorder, not a commercial DVD.

Now I just have to deal with bad look, low light, bad sound, etc.  I think this footage is going to be scrapped...

Re: Video TS to FCP

I'll have to give that software a try next time that need comes my way again.  I hate clients that just hand you a DVD of some 3 year old corporate video and just expect you to be able to pull footage from it like it isn't a problem. :sigh:

I feel your pain about bad footage though.  I have a client down in southern california that I still do work with from time to time.  I'm doing a photo/graphic montage in Motion for them right now.  Last week they decided they wanted to toss in some client testimonials.  I can't get down there to shoot it for them, so the executive director has decided she can do it herself with her camcorder. The only saving grace is that it is an HDV camcorder, so the odds of the picture being somewhat decent are better than I thought, but I'm still cringing at the thought of watching that tape.
