Re: MobileMe Thoughts
Thanks. Hard to find any hard info on MobileMe.
Another question: if I buy a family pack, and take a couple of me.com addresses for spouse and me,
but keep our current 4 btinternet.com addresses, can we sync those accounts too?

Only mobileme (and peehaps still Yahoo!) accounts will push email to the iPhone but you can set other accounts up to check email every 15, 30, or 60 minutes. If they are IMAP accounts then they will stay synchronized as far as which messages are read, put in the trash, etc. between all devices. If they are POP they will not stay synchronized.

Uh-uh, they're POP. Back to the drawing board, but thanks for your help.

There are things you can do to sort of keep pop accounts synchronize between machines. It just depends on how you use your email. For example you can tell it to delete mail from the server when you delete it on a device. Not ideal but....

Re: MobileMe Thoughts
Well, currently five Macs in three countries, and now lusting after a pair of iPhones.
So, keeping it all on the server is the only solution for incoming mail, and we end up having to forward copies of sent mails to each other (otherwise they are only available on the particular Mac used to send them).

You would definitely benefit from switching to either mobileme or some other IMAP accounts.

Re: MobileMe Thoughts
Steve's had some thoughts on the big launch.
In response to the mistakes, Steve Jobs is cracking down on the management of MobileMe, ousting them in favor of Eddy Cue, who will now be in charge of all Apple internet services -- iTunes, the App Store, and now MobileMe. He will report directly to Jobs.
Jobs believes that he, Apple, and the MobileMe team have learned their lesson as he states, "The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services. And learn we will. The vision of MobileMe is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of this year."
Updated 8/5/2008
Ars Technica just posted the full text of Steve Jobs' email to the troops:
Team,
The launch of MobileMe was not our finest hour. There are several things we could have done better:
– MobileMe was simply not up to Apple's standards – it clearly needed more time and testing.
– Rather than launch MobileMe as a monolithic service, we could have launched over-the-air syncing with iPhone to begin with, followed by the web applications one by one – Mail first, followed 30 days later (if things went well with Mail) by Calendar, then 30 days later by Contacts.
– It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store. We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence.
We are taking many steps to learn from this experience so that we can grow MobileMe into a service that our customers will love. One step that I can share with you today is that the MobileMe team will now report to Eddy Cue, who will lead all of our internet services – iTunes, the App Store and, starting today, MobileMe. Eddy's new title will be Vice President, Internet Services and he will now report directly to me.
The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services. And learn we will. The vision of MobileMe is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of this year.

And another PR boner, earlier in article:
Next Apple pulled another bad move in the eyes of many when it automatically checked an option in a Windows iTunes update to install MobileMe software. Many users compared this to Apple's Safari download scandal that broke a few months back.

Re: MobileMe Thoughts
Two more months free.
It became so bad that recently Apple CEO Steve Jobs himself personally apologized on behalf of Apple and said that the service had not been living up to Apple quality. He alluded to "shakeups" of the MobileMe team, indicating someone might be getting canned.
So did the problems get fixed? Somewhat, but many critical problems still persist and many users continue to have difficulty with the service. The MobileMe team yesterday rolled out another apology note. The latest note reads:
We have already made many improvements to MobileMe, but we still have many more to make. To recognize our users' patience, we are giving every MobileMe subscriber as of today a free 60 day extension. This is in addition to the one month extension most subscribers have already received. We are working very hard to make MobileMe a great service we can all be proud of. We know that MobileMe's launch has not been our finest hour, and we truly appreciate your patience as we turn this around. Read this article for more details.
